Funny Finnish Pursuits

Post by SoulFinn » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:09 pm

Has anyone read the book Funny Finnish Pursuits by Risto Etelamaki and Bruno Maximus? I read some story about Finnish festivals like the Wife Carrying Contest etc. Hope for replies.

Wife carryind has been around for years by now. There are contestants from many countries.

But I think now we have a new one that will become a classic: High Heels Race.

Yes, I have that book. I like the pictures (Bruno Maximus oil paintings) and there are also a few photos and the texts are well-written (or translated, whichever). It's missing www links to the events and the clubs.

That could be intentional actually... I guess there will always be a Swamp Football Festival somewhere, or an annual Dress-up-as-a-moose-and-carry-your-drunken-nephew contest... but the www-addresses (if they even exist) might be more prone to change or becoming obsolete than those of e.g. this well-established Forum for example... and since it's a book rather than an annually updated brochure... I guess they've relied on the Google search skills of the interested readers.

Yes, that's what I thought too. But some of those events are now firm fixtures (like the World Wife Carrying Championships) and the telephone throwing. Nordic walking is in there too (funny?), air guitar playing (also an annual event with competitors from all over the world), mölkky, the sauna contest etc. I'm pretty sure there are some fairly serious clubs (and websites) for those events. But yes, I'm sure a quick google would reveal all.

That book looks like a hoot. Bruno Maximus' artworks are great - I've just been taking a look at his work. Does the book include naked running?

The book includes "Topless winter jogging" but there is no painting by Bruno Maximus; there are 15 paintings of his in the book and about 40 funny Finnish pursuits..
