Kela & UK benefit confirmation??

Post by drewminen » Thu Aug 28, 2008 8:31 pm

Hi, I moved to Finland 3 weeks ago and registered with the Job Centre & Kela. I recieved in the post yesterday a letter from Kela saying that I needed to get in touch with Dept of Work Pension (UK) to confirm that I am/not on the social benefits (i think thats what the letter says) back in the UK. I only finished working full time in the UK last month so I could move to Finland with my Finnish wife & son. Advice on just what exactly they're after would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

they want to know that you're not a pensioner as it says...

Hi,

The are referring to all social insurance benefits, including unemployment insurance benefits. You need to get a document from UK, that you don't have any social insurance benefits there anymore, bacause you have moved to Finland.
I guess this might be the place you need to contact in UK: http://www.dwp.gov.uk/

Please see below info from the KELA webpage.

Family members from another EU/EEA country or from Switzerland
The EU Regulation 1408/71 contains no provisions regarding the country under whose social security system the family members of workers are covered. Instead, their social security rights are determined according to the national rules of each country. This means that the family members of a worker who moves to Finland from another EU/EEA country or from Switzerland must move to Finland permanently in order to qualify for social security coverage in Finland.

However, the family members of persons working in Finland are under the EU Regulation entitled to medical treatment and family benefits in Finland even if they live in Finland temporarily or not at all.

Example
K., who comes from Estonia, now works in Finland. His wife and two children (5 and 8 years old) live in Estonia. Although they in Estonia, Finland pays child benefit for the children because K. works in Finland.

In certain situations, workers can choose whether they wish to be covered under the social security system of their country of employment or that of their country of residence. This choice has no effect on the country under whose social security system their family members are covered. However, it may affect a family member’s right to medical treatment or family benefits.

I have a similar situation and I have been told I need different forms on 3 different occasions by Kela..
The one they are asking for now is E301 to show I have worked for at least 2 years in the UK to qualify for benefits. Apparently this form will take 4 weeks to come from the UK.
I don't think I will get anything in the near future!

Did you quit your job in England to move here or were you released / contract not renewed. Perhaps they are also interested in that?

I don't know what the current rules are, but it used to be that if you jacked, as opposed to being fired / let go, then there was a period (3 months) where you were not entitled to claim benefits (IIRC).

Hey Sinkala - forgot to mentioned that I was neither fired nor made redundant but indeed resign so I could move to Finland. I never actually claimed anything etc as it was my choice to leave. I obviously get a pension, though small, but can't draw on that till ripe old age of 65!! :) In the interim - definitely nil entitlements. cheers

I just took a letter with me from Centrelink (Australia) that said I was receiving no benefits. That was all they needed.
