It would be better if you posted your, certifications if you have any. can you be more specific networking is a huge topic. Although I know not many employers browse Finland forum, but a few key words may make a diffrence. What kind of language experience do you have. Now you said 5 years networking, is that cumulative, Im sure you have PC skills as well how long and what gender. Have you been to mol.fi?

I'm Cisco certified (having CCNA) and currently working on the CCNP, which I'm planning to take by the end of this year or the beginning of the next.
I've been working for Iceland Telecom for the last 5 years, doing both helpdesk and installation, configuration and management/debugging of Cisco routers and switches.
I speak Icelandic and English and I'm starting an evening-course in Finnish on the 8th of September.
I do have good general knowledge of computers and I have a little bit of experience in programming in Visual Basic and PHP. I'm also very interested in server management and I've ran my own little webserver for a few years

I have been to mol.fi daily, but they seem to be looking for programmers more than networking people

Excellent, now people know a bit more about your experience, and your knowledge, now no pun intended the networking can begin, if anybody knows of or needs the help they can contact you for more info.
Good luck, Im a hardware tech/ pc junkie for last 20 years, Finland is full of basic techies so its a little tougher here than other countries, but Im a firm believer in networking, perseverance, and good attitude one can start and eventually succeed here in Finland
As for the Finnish language learning, this forums a good place to start, theres some good software out there to help you learn the beginning vocab, pm me if you want more info on the programs.

correct. The ratio of postions between admin and programmer is 1:10.Kjarri.Ho wrote:I have been to mol.fi daily, but they seem to be looking for programmers more than networking people
No need, English is ok for IT. It is better to learn PHP, C++, .net, java. You may take part of open source projects to earn some exp. Update your CV with all programming skills and jubmit a junior application. Unfortunatelly, entry level jobs are very difficult to find.Kjarri.Ho wrote:I'm starting an evening-course in Finnish .

Y? The proffesional characteristics here are more needed than local language, at least in IT. To start speaking as pizza-men in Finnish a person spends 4 years and more. This is huge investment of your time. It is better to stay with familly or learn Java, C++ or whatever.onkko wrote: For you maybe nothing but do not tell others that they shouldnt learn.

if he speaks "comput4r" I'd hired him... sorry, no "BizTalK" in there... (biztalk anyone? )
speaking native depends on the end-looser interface lingua...
sorry onkko, speaking Finnish is the 8th aspect of hiring a geekoid..-. usually you need a filter between "the link betwixt monkey and man" to translate business to system or vice versa.

Even if there's no need per-se to learn Finnish, I would like to. I think it would give me an advantage and I think it's important for me to learn the language (not only for work).finlandforumuser wrote:correct. I've seen some network administrator and network engineer jobs posted and I've applied for them, and many of them require Finnish skills. Primarily because if the office isn't English-speaking, they would have to change the language of the office to English.
Also, if you are a HR person and you have 2 equal candidates but one speaks the language and the other one doesn't, I reckon you would pick the one that speaks the language

At least that's what happened back home when we had an English speaking person joining our forces.
Thanks for the tips, I'll add them to the CV

Re: Looking for IT work in (or around) Helsinki
Quite unlikely. First of all, you won't learn the language on good enough level to be competitive on this field, most of ppl switch to English even they can speak Finnish if they peer is ok on it. Next, HR ( or actually prospective manager) would select the person with higher skill set than language (meaning IT where I work here over decade). And again, after learing Finnish in 5 years you would very likely decide to travel around world to work in other countries and then you undertand that Finnish lang is spoken only 5.3 M people and it is very narrow. So, for work oppotinities, it is better learn Java and take part in OSS projects, it will take you not a one year. Of course, if it is matter of hobby it could be interesting.Kjarri.Ho wrote:Also, if you are a HR person and you have 2 equal candidates but one speaks the language and the other one doesn't, I reckon you would pick the one that speaks the language![]()
