Re: Broadcast jobs wanted
You can start by asking yourself what you, with I am assuming limited skills in Finnish (please correct me if I am wrong), would have to offer companies that they would employ you rather than someone who speaks Finnish? Especially if you mean TV since Finnish broadcasting is in...Finnish! Not saying it cannot be done, but what do you have to offer that is special? And don't say "native English speaker". Everyone thinks it's an advantage and it's not. People here speak English very well. Don't get mad at me for asking this, everyone will ask you this...poe.tuesday wrote:I have always worked in broadcast/tv companies/satalite companies and I would need to stay in this sector and at managerial level.

My understanding of these types of fields are they are very small, everyone knows each other, and jobs go by word of mouth. Start by searching mol.fi.
Also ask yourself, what do you love about Finland a.k.a what are you trying to escape from in London? How many times have you been here? Ever been here in November?

Good luck with your quest!
Re: Broadcast jobs wanted
Media jobs in Finland are rarely advertised as there's more than enough people wanting to get in as it is. Managerial positions are filled usually by people rising through the ranks or by people switching from one company to another. The top execs are usually headhunted. Getting a foot in the door is the hardest part even for the Finns wanting to work in broadcasting of media in general.
In short, I'd say your chances of waltzing right in from abroad and landing a managerial position straight away are quite slim. How's your Finnish? How much do you know about the media market in here? What are your links to the industry in Finland, i.e. do you know the right people? If you don't know what "pienet piirit" means, you'll find out soon.
Try sending a few applications but you'll have to think hard about your value to the employer and what do you have to offer them. You'll face fierce competition for the jobs you're interested in as the Finnish candidates know the industry like the back of their hands and already know all the right people.

The first principle of job hunting: Its not what you know but who you know.. Everything else comes next!!
In your case, try building up your contact base in Finland for a few years before trying your luck!!
Satellite and cable comes to Finland from Canal Digital and Viasat and those are walled gardens with moats around them!!
Where can you contribute in the delivery chain of media broadcasting? that's where your effort should be focussed on!!

Re: Broadcast jobs wanted
Thats the thing that everyone is telling you about.. It is a closed one!! and if you are highly valuable, then most probably you ll be headhunted.poe.tuesday wrote: thank you for your replies, I was just wondering if there were any speicalist job websites out there that dealt with such positions such as grapevinejobs or mandys but from what I can now tell, the industy seems small in Finland any maybe they are not ready to go HD or file based quiet yet or have a dedicated website or recruitment agency that deals with the industry
I will check out the contacts given
and Most adverts. will be in Finnish which will not help you in search. YOu can still try searching your industry keywords at
http://www.mol.fi/paikat/ in the field called "HAKU":
and also scour the www.yle.fi, www.mtv3.fi, www.nelonen.fi, http://www.jimtv.fi/, etc
Moreover, Realize that when you work, it will take many many years (5-10) before you can have work conversations in Finnish with your colleagues.

Job search engines (mol.fi, monster.fi) are much better than a connection. Search for opened positions, send CV. Sooner or later you find the job.raamv wrote:The first principle of job hunting: Its not what you know but who you know

Ok, then. Since you know for a fact that not speaking Finnish is no problem (which it kind of is if you cannot even read the job adverts)... But you have been warned...poe.tuesday wrote:The broadcast industry is very specilised and in particular what I do, not being able to speak Finish would not be a problem as all dealings are done with international companies that speak English

Re: Broadcast jobs wanted
Good luck in your hunt poe.tuesday, I'm in a similar position to yourself (except i'm just seeking a foot in the door rather than anything at management level).poe.tuesday wrote:canal+ is part of the telenor group and does not actually own a tv network, it just transmits HD content from other suppliers, it also does not transmit from Finland and I am looking for work in Finland, so this is good news for me as the Finnish broadcasters will hopefully be looking to go HD and if they do then this is where there will be employement opportunities for me, cheers for the info sinikalasinikala wrote:

I know my business kay30 and I know that I do not need to speak anything other than English to do what I do, I have been doing it for over 20 years including in other non-English speaking countries and thanks to finlandforumuser for the tip about google. I do however heed your warning kay30 as you seems to know better about my line of business than I dokay30 wrote:

I find it amazing that some of you want to find fault with my quest rather than assisting but thankfully there are others on this forum that are willing to guide and advise, who would have thought that so much negative emotion would have been stirred just by asking if there is a website that advertises jobs in broadcast
cheers to all of those of you who have kept my faith in the Finnish as being good people
Keep us updated as to how you get on!

Re: Broadcast jobs wanted
Welcome to reality, there are so many people living their magic world that its needed to do reality check.poe.tuesday wrote: I find it amazing that some of you want to find fault with my quest rather than assisting but thankfully there are others on this forum that are willing to guide and advise, who would have thought that so much negative emotion would have been stirred just by asking if there is a website that advertises jobs in broadcast

First thing to do is find faults on your plan, then you can see if there is faults and correct those.
Just supporting is not helping, i could support someone who wants plant bananas in finland but thats not helping. Reality check is needed, you maybe didnt do it so of course we tell you how things are.
Look every aspect, negative or positive, and calculate if its good. If you think replies are negative then dont move in here, youll get more "negative" in here.
Finding fault in plan is not negative. In works where i have been every plan is shred to pieces and looked if there is faults.

You got some very good advice, based on the reality in Finland. That is not negative, that's real help.poe.tuesday wrote: I find it amazing that some of you want to find fault with my quest rather than assisting but thankfully there are others on this forum that are willing to guide and advise, who would have thought that so much negative emotion would have been stirred just by asking if there is a website that advertises jobs in broadcast
But it seems that you want to see the world through rose coloured glasses. If so, you're in for a surprise.
