Pastrami or any smoked meat
Pastrami or any smoked meat
Anybody have an idea where i can find Mutton (sheep) Pastrami, or any Pastrami made from other types of meat ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastrami
I haven't been able to find real smoked meat anywhere - when i say "real smoked meat" i mean meat (of any type) that was first salted (usually heavily), then smoked.
I've seen some smoked pig's feet in the S-Market under Sokos, but on how they looked i'd say they were only smoked, not salted previously.
I've tried Stockmann Deli already...

I don't use god as an excuse - it just tastes fricking better.onkko wrote:I know and thats not nice but atleast they dont use "god" as excuse.
And i eat Halal around here because i have no alternative - most things i like i can only find in Halal stores.
I still prefer pork though - and if i remember correctly those aren't Halal ('cause they're unclean animals, or something like that).
When people know what they are doing - and people selected to take care of killing the animals usually do know what they are doing, at least back home, with pigs - there is almost no pain for the animal involved.
This is not out of compassion, this is out of practical reasons - if in pain, the animal might bolt from under you, break its ties, and start running after you cut the artery.
Also, it would spill its blood on the ground - and we collect that for blood sausage (like the kind found in Tampere, only with a bit less blood in it, and more condiments and rice and other stuff).

Could you tell me where that import store is, please ?Cory wrote:We buy salted and smoked halal beef from our local import store. Vacuum packed and has a shelf life of about 5 months. It's 3 % salt and is very tasty. And quite reasonably priced at 6.30 for 400 gr. You'll find it in the refrigerated section. It's first imported to Sweden and then exported to import shops in Finland. Don't know where it's produced originally. The website of the Swedish importer is http://www.arb.se

You could check Chef Wotkins store in Sörnäinen. Industrial area (red brick), on the left side right before the bridge to Kulosaari.

There' s pastrami at Stockmann's meat/cutlet counter. Most likely made of beef or pork?
Also Pirkka series (in K markets) has Pastrami: http://www.pirkka.fi/ruoka/pirkka_tuott ... 0405059680
The nearest Finnish equivalent is suolaliha. It's first salted and then cooked (either by boiling or smoking, or boiling and smoking).

Re: Pastrami or any smoked meat
I seriously must've missed it, as i've been there only Thursday, and there was nothing smoked there except for some pigs feet, and from the colour those looked to be just smoked, not salted before (they're excellent for bean soup - well, not soup but "ciorbã", which is a thicker kind of soup predominant in our area).zam wrote:There' s pastrami at Stockmann's meat/cutlet counter.
