Internet Connection without Finnish Social Security Number
Internet Connection without Finnish Social Security Number
Hi all.
I just moved in, and I will stay in Turku for the next 2 years. The Kela card and all the other paperwork are being arranged (so far I only have the residence permit), but those should take some 2 months to be at hand.
I payed a visit to Elisa and DNA to ask for internet connection, but they both require the finnish social security number to provide the service.
So, I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that could offer the service only with my passport number (non E.U.).
Kiitos a lot!

Once you register with the local maistraatti (the local register offices) I think you should get from there the SS#. It was a really long time ago but I think it was there where I got mine. And it was the first few days of living in Finland. I guess receiving the KELA card itself might take time etc. but you getting a Finnish SS# should be instant when you register as a resident of Finland. I'd go to the maistratti and ask them.

go to local magistratti and have them register you. in a matter of days, you will get finnish social security number posted to you. without social security number, you can't do any offical paperwork here. I am not into kela system but wondering how without that social number, you can proceed with kela and all!!??

Great! I was planning on going there by the end of this week, and if it only takes a few days for the number, then I think I can manage living without web at home in the meantime.
Appreciate the tips!

If you don't have a Finnish social security number Welho is asking for 200 euro deposit for any kind of service. After paying this money you can make the contract and start using internet in 15 mins. They promise to give it back when you end the contract

I just got back from maistraatti, handed in the forms, and the nice lady told me that I can go get the number tomorow. Finnish efficiency
And I can keep my hard earned 200 euros

Dont be so sure, you dont have finnish credit history. That 200e(or something) bond is for people without good credit.oziS wrote:I just got back from maistraatti, handed in the forms, and the nice lady told me that I can go get the number tomorow. Finnish efficiency![]()

Yeah, not to rain on your parade or anything, but if internet is anything like phone service, get that 200 ready just in case. All things credit related and people want the soc sec number onlhy to be able to look in the system to see your credit. Once they see nothing, they'll ask for the money. I've been approved over the phone in the past for phone service despite me asking if they were sure-due to this glitch - then sure enough, comes the letter asking for the deposit (and 200 is low, I've seen 300!).
You'll have to be here at least 2 years to have the credit history they want...which doesn't help you, unfortunately.

Try saunalahti if you want to get around that security deposite. I dunno if they ask for it now, but back in the day when I first moved here, they didn't require that.

Unless that is something completely new Welho have started doing, asking for a deposit, then the above statement is wrong. You'll have to be here at least 2 years to have the credit history they want...
I and at least three of my colleagues went and got a Welho connection within a week of moving to Finland, and no deposit. No one ever mentioned anything of the kind. It is another thing if you want to get a gsm phone contract, then in most cases you have to pay a deposit or go for prepaid.

Onkko and Desundial were partially right. I went to Elisa with my brand new finn ID, looking for a 3G connection, and they asked me for a wooping 300 euro deposit.
But then I payed a visit to Sonera, and the only thing that I was asked was 1 euro for the 3g modem. The 20 euro/month comes later on the bill.
I can't say if that was luck or if they are really not yet charging for deposit, but for those in need of mobile internet, that may be an option.
