interior and product design
interior and product design
Hy! First I like to introduce myself. I'm Daniela and I arrived in Finland. Like I explain in other posts, I've decided to stay here.
Because of that, I'm wondering what kind of interior design is suitable for this country, and if the thing that I can do will be interesting here.
I aspect from you a small description of design domain in Finland.
If you want you can visit my blog, where are some of my artist things (not only interior design). handyme.blogspot.com
Looking forward to read as many ideas you can post!
Thanks! Daniela

Re: interior and product design
Finnish interior design style is whatever you can afford from IKEA.
Sad but true.
Those who can afford to pay for interior designer have different tastes (watching Inno interior design show most likely sea themed).
But they are few and far apart.

The most suitable interior design for this country is white on white..dessi_tm wrote: Because of that, I'm wondering what kind of interior design is suitable for this country,
Other designs make it dark and gloomy like the outside..

Hi Daniela,
Do you have any qualifications? I am a qualifed Draftsman & studying architecture with 5 years experince in interior design... The thing about Finland you will find is to need a degree to work in 98% of fields. Harsh reality I have learnt of this country is they judge on a piece of paper and not the quality of your work...also make your CV a boring 1-3pg document with no frills... it scares them.
Good luck

well...I can't say I have much experience; i've worked in this field almost 2 years..And through all years of study I have experience in handmade stuff. In Romania all this things were very loved, also the interior design is more worm than here. The thing that i've noticed here is that they love wallpapers. About other things in design field in here....unfortunately, I couldn't realized in what area they go.
Here are they working In interior design software?

Re: interior and product design
I'd like to first point out an Interior Designer and Interior Decorator are different things. Interior designer will use a combination of hand sketches, cad software, Adobe creative suite in the process of designing a space and material selection. The interior decorator on the other hand selects items, fabrics & paint finishes to fit out a room generally with minimal design concept...more just an overall idea.
I can agree with other peoples comments on here that not many finns require this field... the ones who do pay the professionals to do it. It is not an easy country to find work in these fields unfortunatly.

Re: interior and product design
sorry, you are right, I think i didn't express myself correctly. I would love to do both of these things (interior , decorating). I've finished the interior design school, and I've worked as a decorator. So both are familiar to me. As for the software programs, I understand here is used more often cad domain (autocad, archicad).
Unfortunately I can say that this thing is very not artistic....because even an engineer that know autocad , can do these things, because, on computer, almost every project looks good. I don't know if you agree with me, but this is my opinion. And I can say that, because I've seen people doing that, and the final project was very not reliabil, if you understand what I'm saying.

I forgot to say, that the thing that finnish people respect and love, are handmade stuff. So, in my opinion, they should like the interior decoration.... But...maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I am used with things like this, because the art domain is very subjective!

Re: interior and product design
there is no lack of people who design stuff - but there is a lack of people who design stuff that can actually be used. my favorite is the office building in Ruoholahti where the S-market is, used to switch bus to metro there - so they have a nice glass facade... and when the summer came you could see under the womens skirts who had their desks there facing the window... "design" yeah...

Well, then she has to get into interior interior err. designing.. eh!!
The works used by you are pretty much very niche and only high end people who can afford that uses those kinds of designers..but then what makes you so unique?
I mean, I ask this question pretty much to everyone who thinks that they can be a MIchael jackson or Ja Ja gabor or Busta Rhymes...
What makes you or your work so Unique that you can qualify to get a job pretty much with what you know?
Otherwise, who do you know?

Re: interior and product design
The general preference here appears to be white, grey or light blue walls with any colour coming by way of curtains rugs and sofas, no idea why really.
Whenever people visit our house for the first time they always say. "Wow so much colour this looks so warm and nice", closely followed by, "I think I would get bored with the colours though"
I have never understood this statement, I really can't understand how people think having every room a different colour can be boring, while all white is not.
The only people I know here with warm looking colourful houses are all foreign, so unless you are big on Scandinavian design I am not sure how well you can do here, sorry I really don't like to be negative, but I do wish you all the best.

paint the cieling beige...annekmc wrote: I really can't understand how people think having every room a different colour can be boring,
because its not "life on mars" any more.... back in the day... lets see, the kitchen was yellow with orange cupboards, the bathroom was an anilline red, the hall was a pink and my room was bright pistachio green... and then there was velvet bordello wallpaper, bright red in the hall and yellow in the livingroom... when I moved here to my 70's flat the originals had the kitchen poison green... the hallway was oxblood red, and one of the livingroom walls was bright yellow... bedrooms seemed to have been orange...
so yeah, my walls are boring cream and while not white the bedrooms a light blue... gave up with the kitchen its got blue tiles, white cupboards and the one remaining wall is bright yellow... and its filled with beatles yellow submarine posters so I can feel as a small kid when I wake up with my coffee

BTW I think in Germany its traditional to paint over rental flats just plain white when moving.
