i want to get a cat, what shoudl i do!

Post by lottalita83 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 7:00 pm

hello
i have already posted this up accidentally to moving to Finland, I tried to delete it, but i don't know how, anyway here it is again!

I have just moved to Finland and I am living alone in a small flat... I am finding this very difficult and lonely so I was thinking of getting a cat.

But as they say a "pet is for life not just for Christmas", therefore i would like to ask around for general advice. here are a fwe questions i would like to ask:

1. where is the best place to get a cat, preferable a kitten
2. how much is the chipping and vaccinations
3. is there pet insurance and how much is it.
4. if needed are there pet hotels where you can leave your pets in for short holidays

also any extra advice you can offer me, would be great. I don't want to jump in head first and find that i can't afford a cat!

so thanks for all advice! :D

1. where is the best place to get a cat, preferable a kitten
http://www.hesy.fi .
http://www.loytoelaintalo.fi/
Both have got animal shelters . Only in Finnish.
2. how much is the chipping and vaccinations
Less than € 300 I guess
3. is there pet insurance and how much is it.

Kuluttajien vakuutustoimisto ja Vakuutuslautakunta
Malminkatu 34
00100 Helsinki

Puh. (09) 6850 120

Give them a call. Insurance is not compulsory.
4. if needed are there pet hotels where you can leave your pets in for short holidays

Are you going to live in Finland permanently (as long as the cat lives at least) is another question you should ask yourself, and if you're not, are you prepared to take the cat with you when you leave? A cat isn't just for when you're in Finland.

My daughter wanted something furry I told her to look in the fridge, but she wanted to cuddle it, she doesn't understand the benefits of penicillin yet, anyway after going through the usual dogs, cats etc we decided to get gerbils, not to expensive, relatively easy to look after and I won't have to take them for a walk when my daughters not here and they do not get attached to people like cats do.

thanks little frank for you post....

well i am Finnish by birth, so in a way yes i am planning to be here at least a few years, and if i move definitely take the cat with me... all my life i have had pets, but they are at our family home... so i understand the decision to make by having a cat...and how attached you can get to animals.

though your idea of a gerbil is not bad... maybe i can start with that and move on to a cat... have my own tom and jerry story.

also thank you little Indian... your reply was very helpful, still need to wait a few months to make sure i can afford. but now i can actully look into it!!!

thanks all

lotta! :D

Where do you get those red stickers people put on their front door that tell you have a pet, in case there's a fire ?

oh, that's a neat idea :D

The pet boarding places can tend to be expensive so it would pay to have a pool of friends that don't mind babysitting or at least checking in on kitty when you're away for a weekend. As nice as it is to have a cat it can also be a pain if you do like to get away esp on the spur of the moment.

Maybe you can get a gerbil and a cat so they can look after and keep each other company whenever you're away
