Here we go again..another school shooting

Let's play spot the difference:
Mr Vanhanen also said authorities would look at whether there needed to be changes in internet monitoring.
"The internet and YouTube forums... are not another planet. This is part of our world and we adults have the responsibility to check what is happening, and create borders and safety there," he said.

Finnish President Tarja Halonen told broadcaster YLE: "The Internet and YouTube forums ... are not another planet. This is part of our world and we adults have the responsibility to check what is happening, and create borders and safety there."

You'd have thought the Beeb could tell the difference - and that they could parse a simple Reuters news feed. Apparently not.
It's also pissing me off not a little that nearly all the media - including the GUARDIAN hrmph-hrmph seem to think this poor copper in Kauhajoki actually saw the "you will die next" video.
I quote:
A student gunman who killed 10 people at a college in Finland yesterday had been detained by police the day before because of a YouTube posting that showed him firing a handgun and threatening: "You will die next".
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/se ... sworldwide
Uhkaavammat videot tulivat mitä todennäköisimmin julki vasta tiistaina muun kuva-aineiston kanssa. Näillä videoilla Saari muun muassa toteaa ”you will die next”, sinä kuolet seuraavaksi, ja ampuu kohti kameraa.
Sloppy, sloppy.

Oh, and BTW, you can vote on Holmlund's future. So far the Nays are winning.

The Guardian thing will be changed asap.
Re: Here we go again..another school shooting
There's a timeline here, but as with so much stuff that was done in a rush at the beginning, it's hard to know how well it will stand up. Better than nothing. Maybe.TampereOwl wrote:The Guardian thing will be changed asap.

Some observations:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 817612.ece
The college where the massacre occurred was sealed off this morning behind police tape and guarded by soldiers from the Finnish army.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... years.html
--In Kauhajoki, a sleepy town of around 14,000 people, streets were still jammed with police vans and military vehicles a day after the shootings.
[Comment: What is the purpose for this military presence? Are they trying to intimidate the population? Did the military have any other role in this event?]
------------
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 817612.ece
--(The school) has been closed until Monday but a steady a stream of pupils, dressed mostly in black, were arriving during the day to leave candles and messages for their lost friends.
[Comment: Were they dressed in funereal black out of respect for the victims? Or was it a 'satanic' black to show their sympathy to the acts of the perpetrator?]
----------
http://www.hs.fi/english/article/Gunman ... 5239731067
The male student who died in the classroom was apparently a relatively close friend of Saari. This would imply that even the presence of a good friend did little to turn Saari from his decision to start shooting. ....A photograph has also been circulating on the Internet, in which Saari and his victim are seen mugging and making faces together. ....All signs seem to point to the fact that Saari acted alone. There were no accomplices.
[Comment: The police seem to be very hasty in their conclusion the shooter acted alone. A logical man would leave open the possibility the friend was perhaps not a victim, but rather a confederate.]

Two suicides have been reported in Jokela since the school shootings(of Nov '07). Ristolainen says that a connection with the massacre can neither be proven, nor ruled out.
In more than a few school shootings, other deaths of people connected to the scene have died mysteriously after the fact. That happened after Columbine, Erfurt(Germany), Red Lake(Minnesota), and Virginia Tech. I think these are reminders for people to keep their mouths shut, though of course I am just speculating. But I don't believe the killing is over just yet.
In view of the continued failure of investigating officers to come up with a believable motive for these crimes, it behooves us to think "outside the box" and perhaps look at non-traditonal motives, however fearful that is to some people.

The schoolmate describes Saari as a nice boy. He and Saari were in the same class in the upper-level comprehensive school. “In the ninth grade he started mixing with some rather heavier circles, but I would still have never believed that something like this could happen.”
[Comment: I wonder if these 'heavier circles' isn't a code word for that satanic black/death metal scene that seems to be so entrenched amongst the youth in the European far north.]

So being interior minister when some lunatic goes postal is reason to get fired or resign? Should minister of agriculture resign when the crop is bad?otyikondo wrote:Please note: sending text messages to large-bosomed floozies is a much more serious offence. All the voters should remember that they are voting for _local_ government, not those that make laws and command police force.

The Finnish police only have soft-skinned vehicles, none are armoured. So whenever there is a situation involving firearms or explosives, army vehicles are deployed.starviego wrote: [Comment: What is the purpose for this military presence? A clear example of ignorance of the facts breeding false and misleading speculation.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I think if you had, you might have seen several reasons why Ms. Holmlund's chair might be creaking under her.
Not least the failure to follow through on promises made last November. Or the rather lame references to EU directives - given that Finland already HAD an alarming case, one might have thought that the country's leaders would actually take the LEAD and not wait to see what other less-troubled member-states planned to do.
And since when has the public in any country not used the democratic process - including municipal or European elections - to comment on the popularity or otherwise of the government? A good many of the sitting MPs are also members of local councils...
Re: Here we go again..another school shooting
Q&A section at the www.cmx.fi website - not that I hold the band in any authority when in comes to political matters, but still their answer isn't all that off the mark IMO.

Finland was actually opposing those very EU directives until Jokela, so the references to me have quite sinister hand-washing implications. Vanhanen's opposition to improved psychiatric care is also pretty damn cynical.otyikondo wrote:Did you happen to watch A-Talk last night?Upphew wrote:So being interior minister when some lunatic goes postal is reason to get fired or resign? Don't you think it would be the nice thing to do to have a whip-round for the poor guy, buy him a tinfoil hat, put a down-payment down on a bunker, get him into a therapy program or something.
