Well, finding a job might not be that easy - depending a lot what you are willing to do. Living in Helsinki is pretty expensive - but not compared to say Paris or London.
Oh, BTW welcome to the group and congratulations on getting into Hanken. It is a pretty good school.

There is a small Indian community in Helsinki/Vantaa area..as you might guess mainly in the restaurant business....try and make contact with them is probably best way of getting a start in part time work in their restuarants.
When you ask about the "status" of Indians in Finland..not quite sure what you mean..
.as a student you will be treated as equal to any other student...the school which you are attending is a very good multiracial society..and out side of school generaly speaking Finns accept all other races as just slightly inferior to Finns
with exception of Swedes who are very inferior felllows that cheat at Ice Hockey
which is thought of here as worse than cheating at Cricket..

Hi vslu,
small world, i have also just got admitted to Hanken but on the the Ms majoring in Marketing. I am currently working as a waiter, took me a while to get a job but one always gets there in the end.
You are probably in close contact with Hanken, i think they would be a good place to start for accomodation and any posibilities for finding a job, and then there is the student union who i unfortunatly know nothing about so far.
Regards
Roland

There wre another tidal wave of fresh young IT graduates dumped from higher education institutes onto the job market ealier this month.
I doubt that more than 20% have found a job yet.

I know how you feel
Hei everybody,
I am very new to Finland forum, so I apologise if this causes problems for anyone!
I am currently living in England, however, next year I will hopefully be moving to Helsinki to attend university and I have been wondering about getting a part-time job so that I can cover my living costs. This is all very well and good, but I don't know where to start! I'm learning finnish (gradually!) so that shouldn't be a big problem.
Please, If you have any suggestions or comments I'd love to hear them.
Many Thanks

I am half way through in the program you are accepted. It is an interesting degree and now extended to be a two years program with some additions. Academically I suggest that it is a good one to study.
Jobwise, my friend, you are in illusion. There is no way that you will make enough money to live. Because it is almost impossible to find a job. For anything you can think of you will be asked to speak Finnish. You might be able to find something eventually but that will, probably, be an ill paying one. So bottom line is DO NOT count on finding a part time job and making enough money. You should be able to support yourself for a while, without any work. Plus your professor will make sure that you only have spare time for eating and sleeping. Now he has more stuff to play around with (more courses and for longer) god knows what plans he has for you

Hanken campus ? Well check the pictures on the web site, there is no campus and no jobs and if there was you would be required to speak Swedish.
Basically if you don't have the money in kitty no way. Required amount of 6000 is not an exageration and that is the way cookie crubmles in Finland.
"Don't come near, don't come near, you're straight from the cold street"
Another reason to save up if you want to study here:
Resident permits based on student status are restrictive especially if you are from a non-EU country. If you are coming here to study and are from within the EU, there is no restriction on working while studying, but you must be able to support yourself while studying here.
However, if you are a student from a non-EU country, you are restricted in the number of hours you can work (cannot exceed 20 hours/week) and you must keep a minimum of 500/month (6000 eur /year) in the bank account (with exceptions made if educ inst is free, etc.). So that means if you must work to support yourself, then you probably want to find a PT job that guarantees you at least 500/month. Perhaps you can try going through your advisor/professor first and see if you can get a research or course assistant position?
See http://www.uvi.fi/netcomm/content.asp?path=8,2474,2515for more info.

Hi everyone, you must keep a minimum of 500/month (6000 eur /year) in the bank account (with exceptions made if educ inst is free, etc.).
I am also coming to Helsinki in Sept for MS at HUT. Is this minimum amount of 6000 Eur required at all times?? or is it 500 E ?
Can one expect to get a job within 6 months time ?? 2-3 months w/o job are okay, but beyond that I am sure it will start to hurt

Where can one find info on part time jobs on the internet ??
Thanks!!
Aish
Aww man, sorry to hear about that....tgabawm wrote:Two years, few months to get my second master's degree, fluent in two languages, knowledge of more... Still no job...It's tough to find ANY job here but everyone eventually finds one.
So what field of studies are your master's in ?
