what was that village some fishermen actually did pull the plug off a pond and emptied it into some old mineshafts?

As horrible as this may sound, the current awful state of the economy right now works to my benefit when moving back. People can't sell their homes so they're forced to rent them out for dirt cheap prices. I can get a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a big yard for the same price that I pay for my 1 bedroom apartment in hki. but thanks anyway at your attempt to make me feel bad about my decision to move back :P

ahh, some people just can't help but try to bring others down

Don't know, but the picture is probably one of the overflows at Ladybower reservoir in Derbyshire.

Yep... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladybower_Reservoir

All the best for your return to the US Scuba, any thoughts on returning to Finland in the future or did you get your fill?

Save some place for me, will ya?
I had a pretty nice offer in Seattle with a good start salary but I couldn't go there because:
1. S*O. Unable to leave Finland, and scared of unknown. Well, since I left a good opportunity for her so I demanded her to cook food for me, massage my beck, iron my clothes etc everyday
2. Paperwork. This may have taken at least 4 months.

Thanks! I'll definitely return to visit friends and who knows..... if McCain is elected, I can't imagine staying in the states, but not so sure Finland will be on the top of my list of places to seek refuge

Again, I had some wonderful years here along with the bad. I'll have a lot of great memories. Been almost 14 yrs abroad (almost 10 of them in Finland), it's time to go home.

Good luck Oombongo with whatever happens! I share that fear your wife has of the unknown, which is why I did a 4 month trial stay before I decided to move back.

Of course, if you expect things to do where you need English..then it could be a little less but still lots of things... ( There are almost muskari, uima allas, askartelu huone, etc etc )

Good luck with you moving to the states...
Thanks for the well wishes. I'm almost done with all my packing so now I have time to write :P

I know there are plenty of horrible places in America where I wouldn't dare raise my daughter, so no need for anyone to shove that down my throat  . I'm also sure there are plenty of good places in Finland to raise children with plenty of interesting things to do. I'm only comparing the place I live now to the place I'm moving to at the end of this week. I wish the best to all the expat families living in Finland and hope your experience is better than mine was. I definitely had some great years in Finland, and quite a few that were not so
I didnt berate your experience neither did I ever mean to judge upon your opinion/decision.. thats yours and yours only..
Its to each on their own!! But this forum is there to point out to people that there are possibilities here... and its entirely upto you to avail of those or not..
( example of family friendly was taken from here in case you are wondering : http://virtual.finland.fi/netcomm/news/ ... SAID=38634 )
( and some studies to support this: http://www.colorado.edu/journals/cye/17 ... ndRome.pdf and
http://www.madeinearnest.com/documents/helsinki.pdf )
Its good that you decided to move with your kid to a place that you know that both will be comfortable with!!
and When you do visit here...do let us know in advance.....

That's the closest 'lake' to where I grew up, and those terrifying plugholes the reason I find it a little bit daring to go swimming in a lake.

I loan what user GyN wrote in other forum.

Olipa kerran Simo.
Eiväthän he edes muistaisi Simoa.
Kerrankin Simo saisi huomiota, vaikka apu onkin liian myöhäistä.

On kaunis kevätpäivä, koulua on jäljellä enää muutama viikko ennen kesäloman alkua.

Vihdoinkin Simo huomataan.

Call me old fashioned but seeing 4, 15-16 years old drinking a 8 or 10 pack beer carton at 11 o'clock in the morning on monday on a bench does not give me a hallaluja feeling either :(

Although that does not make me feel warm either, I dont think that beer has had any influence or the behaviour of the youths involved in Myyrmäki bombing or the two school shootings.

All three of those seemed to have some psycho problems.

Then they managed to get access to "killing tools" and used them.

Preventing the likes of these problem youths gaining that access is not easy.

Even the idea of making all hand gun licences subject to the providing of "a mental health evaluation by a doctor, certifying that the permit-seeker does not have any mental illness or problems that might pose danger to him or herself or others" is not a sure stop all.

It also assumes that doctors will be willing to do this task.

It only takes the finger of blame to be pointed at one doctor, who issued an OK certificate to someone, who later runs amok with a gun, for the medical profession to stop this work. Medical diagnostics can never be 100% sure.

That is if they ever agree to start this task.

Wasn't that exactly what that Times journalist said in both of his articles.

He got bashed by Finns and others for saying .."there is something wrong with Finnish Education that turns out kids that are out of control."
