Jorvi is a general hospital for all inhabitants of Espoo. However, kids (and adults) from Espoo are sometimes referred to HYKS (Helsinki University Hospital) to see specialists (eg allergologists, ENT etc) but it is always Jorvi who does the referral. Espoo residents can't go direct to HYKS.

We got referred to Jorvi from the Doctors in East Vantaa for our little boy who had Salmonella, thats why I made the asumption

Why not use a private hospital like Mehiläinen?

Because public ones are just fine.

There lies a problem though because they are not (anymore). Pressure is too high and patients are numbers. Do not mind to pay the taxes but then I would like to have good services too. Now they are cutting down healthcare while people get older and pressure is mounting.

Update - went back to the doctor today who had all the blood test results back from Monday. No hepatitis, no mono - so this is good. But he ran more tests today and found sugar and protein in the urine and the white blood cell count is pretty low. Still no diagnosis, so we're headed off tomorrow morning to see a paediatrician. Doctor today mentioned a few times to go to the hospital, but i really want to avoid it if at all possible - he gave me a referral to Jorvi with all the blood test results on it in case his condition worsens during the evening and we have to go.

Today the dear boy has lost the rash, but still has a 39 degree temperature, slightly improved headache, slightly improved appetite - so so it sounds like he is improving. Still a bit of a worry tho' - this is day 6 and he really never gets sick.

Private healthcare in Finland is very inexpensive, and I believe Kela covers a percentage of the cost.

So you choose goldie instead of blondi?

How do you know it is inexpensive when you do not even know the percentage you get back from Kela?

Maybe you should try lying a couple of days in a private hospital without insurance?

I have never used the Kela system, so I cannot give you an amount. But, I can give you the amount without Kela, which is about 50 euros for a doctors visit. Which to me is a small price to pay for immediate service!

Well maybe that depends what you get for it. If it costs the doctor 10 minutes, he costs 300 euro an hour :lightbulb:

Most people in Finland have to use public services and Kela so just be lucky you do not have to do it I guess. The myth of free health services is broken down by certain parties who think that everybody should go private because they think that is Nirvana. Well ask the mayority of the americans how they feel about this system.

Sounds very strange. Did he have all the childhood vaccines? Could it be something like scarlet fever or measles or mumps??? I know a lot of kids from the USA have never been innoculated against those baby illnesses because they have virtually been wiped out in the States. Not sure about Australia/NZ though.

Good luck. But keep zen about Jorvi, it isn't that bad. And if you have to go it's probably better to go midweek than in an emergency at the weekend....

on a cursory look Eiran Sairaala charges 439/day at the hospital ward... didn't find others with per diem prices for wards, but at klinikka22 hemorroids are 2200... so I think if you think thats "cheap" I'll rather show my ass to a public quack for the 11,50
