Update - went back to the doctor today who had all the blood test results back from Monday. No hepatitis, no mono - so this is good. But he ran more tests today and found sugar and protein in the urine and the white blood cell count is pretty low.

did they test for myyräkuume?

I was thinking the same...
But then protein in the urine is pretty scary IMNSHO!!! It indicates viral dysfunction and needs to be looked into!!
Any indication of stomach ache? or abnormal pain apart from the fever?

But he ran more tests today and found sugar and protein in the urine and the white blood cell count is pretty low. Still no diagnosis, so we're headed off tomorrow morning to see a paediatrician. Doctor today mentioned a few times to go to the hospital, but i really want to avoid it if at all possible - he gave me a referral to Jorvi with all the blood test results on it in case his condition worsens during the evening and we have to go.

Today the dear boy has lost the rash, but still has a 39 degree temperature, slightly improved headache, slightly improved appetite - so so it sounds like he is improving. Still a bit of a worry tho' - this is day 6 and he really never gets sick.

Sounds very strange. Did he have all the childhood vaccines? Could it be something like scarlet fever or measles or mumps??? I know a lot of kids from the USA have never been innoculated against those baby illnesses because they have virtually been wiped out in the States. Not sure about Australia/NZ though.

Good luck. But keep zen about Jorvi, it isn't that bad. And if you have to go it's probably better to go midweek than in an emergency at the weekend....

He did have all his vaccines - later than the usual schedule and under the supervision of an immunologist, mostly because of a pretty serious allergic reaction to a vaccine in his older brother. We don't vaccinate against scarlet fever in Australia. One of my other boys had measles (about a year after his vaccination for it - go figure) and the symptoms are quite different, and it's a different type of rash. Measles is like a pinprick rash - this was more like blotchy splotches on his torso and a tiny bit on his upper arms and thighs.

Today he says he slept all night (first time in a week) and his fever has gone. Only a few spots of the rash on his chest left now too, but still with the headache. But he's as skinny as a stick and very pale. I think he must have lost a lot of weight - he ws too skinny to start with! I have no idea if the symptoms fit, but could it be HFMD (caused by an enterovirus)? I just stumbled upon this article (Google translation) today. What they’re saying is that there seems to be some sort of an epidemic in the south, and also adults have been affected.

Well, since virus lives in moles and is transmitted through their droppings it most likely is why he asked. I think I got my case when I was clearing old firewood piles which most likely included ages old mole nests somewhere.

If the kids gets serious pain in the back (around kidneys) it's good sign that you got mole fever. It might be good to try to track how much he urinates. Virus messes up your kidneys. At it's worst phase I was drinking at least around 3-4 l per day. And only half 0,5l came out.

Kidney phase was preceded by high fever for about a week (39-40). When fever started to go down, pains began.

Just got back from seeing the specialist. Still no diagnosis. She tested urine again, and there is still sugar and protein in there. Then they took more blood for sugar in the blood which came back normal, again. More blood tests for levels of creatine, potassium and natrium (salt i guess) were taken today, and she's also testing for "puumalavirus" (which i think is that mole virus you were talking about). Only thing is that he is actually doing much better today, even as the day progresses. He's hungry too, which is great. If it were the mole virus then i imagine he would still be quite sick. The doctor is thinking that he may have some kind of kidney dysfunction, but i don't know what that will mean for him in practical terms.

Such a mystery!! We get the blood test results back tomorrow (the doctor will call me) and she wants to see him again on Monday. Poor kid has had 5 lots of blood taken since Monday, 2 throat swabs, liver ultrasound, and a facial x-ray. He's good natured about it all tho'.

Depends. Symptoms on mole fever are varied. Some people have it without noticing, minor fever etc. Others end up in dialysis or, in rare cases, die.

It's severity can vary greatly.

Kidney dysfunction could hint at Puumalavirus. As said, it hits the kidneys. Namely in this case means they don't work fully or even might stop working at all.

It's the extreme end of the scale. Huge majority falls somewhere way below that (my guess is that most patients never know they had the virus since it is just like normal fever) but it is not something to ignore.

They estimate there are 6000 cases annually, but only 1000 are bad enough to make patient seek doctor.

Symptoms, high fever without breathing problems. Headache, vomiting etc.

Less than 1 in 1000 die. But it CAN be fatal. So not something to ignore.

It could be worse, this could be USA and Sin Nombre-virus, also member of Hanta-virus family. 50% fatality in humans.

Good to hear your boy is recovering, we had the vatsatauti (brought from thailand or other exotic countries to my idea) 2 years ago and we had it twice (good to lose weight though

yeah 2-5 weeks could also be the symptoms..
Lucky he is not sent to emergency care like me..They still couldnt figure out what was the exact virus that caused my kidneys to almost fail...Tooks 3 weeks to recover after severe back pain N abdominal pain..
Your son's symptons looks like it is as the creatinen and potassium and natrium (Salts) levels being checked.. so Lots of liquids are very very essential ( I was drinking around a glass every 1/2 hour and mebbe at some point 5-6 litres of liquids a day)..
Strange is the sugar ?
Till date, I have no idea what I touched or went close to..and no diagnosis on the virus either and I tested negative for both myyrakuume and puumalavirus..

Update ...

Doctor says blood tests (for creatine, potassium, natrium) are normal. Puumala virus is negative. But still there is protein in the urine.

Back to the doc on Monday for more testing

sounds like my problem... n I was in like the emergeny ward of meilahti ( busiest in Finlad) for 24 hrs and then on observation for 3 weeks.
so suggest you take this seriously and ask them for a meilahti ward..and feed lotsa liquids for him..
