Anyone know, is it being relayed on any tv or radio channel? I need to record it you see, as I won´t be around to listen live on air...... Anyone get lucky enough to get a ticket? I was outbid on huuto, but I would have given a week´s kotihoidontuki raha to get a ticket!!!! Last time I heard them on radio 3 UK, playing in London over 20 yrs ago, I recorded it on tape, & still listen to it to this day & get that wonderful feeling......... Never seen them live though, but did manage to see Sir Simon Rattle conduct at the proms once or twice

For all the BP fans (and classical buffs in general) out there, Deutsche Grammophon has opened a download shop at

... although I prefer to buy cds the good thing about this particular site is that there are quite a few deleted items available on (legal!) downloads. As for BP recordings there seem to be 450 or so albums in the 320 kbps mp3 download selection...

My personal BP fav moment... is perhaps the slow movement of Mahler's 6th symphony as conducted by Karajan. Bliss.

Never saw them live either...

Our copy of Mahler's 6th was conducted by Bersntein...

I have Rattle's version of Mahler's 10th with the Berliner Philharmoniker... was a bit underwhelmed after all the hype it got.

Mahler always reminds me of Educating Rita ....

Mahler........ I went to the UK proms at the Royal Albert Hall when I was a music student. One concert was the Boston Phil conducted by Seiji Ozawa, with Jessye Norman singing. It was Mahler´s 2nd. The most emotional moment in my life. I knew from that moment on that I would certainly be a classical musician all my life. I even did my final year thesis on Mahler´s songs. I have so many Mahler recordings still, but all on cassette tape. remember those? So leads to the biggest musical regret of my life, that I was not a French horn player, to play in a Mahler symphony. Still can´t grumble, am a flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, tenor horn (english brass band), trombone & tuba player, so I get my fair share of juicy moments to play

I haven't actually heard Sir Simon's BP tenth - but I have his earlier one with the Bournemouth SO... (for those following the thread & not familiar with Mahler, he never quite finished his tenth... but he got rather close, and enough material was left for posterity that some musicologist/s -the name/s of whom escape me now- made a performing version of it...)

Speaking of different versions, the more the merrier said Kathleen Ferrier - I'm sure Bernstein's Mahler 6 is more than worth hearing, too. Can't remember if I heard it myself... but I do like his 4th with the Concertgebouw a lot. And the 9th that he did with the BP - IIRC the only occasion when he was allowed to try Karajan's orchestra

Hmm I think I've heard some of Jessye Norman's Mahler recordings too, probably Das Lied von Der Erde but the 3rd Symphony (with Abbado) definitely - very good.

Live Mahler... I haven't heard too much Mahler live I'm sad to say, but within my limited experience I suppose the proverbial biscuit is taken by the two occasions I've heard Das Lied von der Erde at the Finlandia Hall, first with Monika Groop and more recently Anne-Sofie von Otter as the alto soloist... can't compare them, both were excellent... well maybe in the final Abschied Groop "out-hushed" Otter... it took quite a while after the last notes had died away until anyone dared start applauding... one of those magical moments.

I'll be heading for a short stint in Vienna on my forthcoming summer holiday - think I'll need to do another pilgrimage to Grinzinger Friedhof where the tomb of the symphonist lies.

It's very...err.. "severe", isn't it. Text looks like another Gustav's (Klimt) signature.

Apropos of which, I saw this in New York. Nearest I'm ever likely to be to USD 135 million. It WAS lovely, but think of the poor suffering banks you could rescue with that sort of dosh.

Yep - as you probably noticed, nothing but the name on it - no dates, either way. The strangest thing is, it's literally buried (!) in the small Grinzing graveyard, in the suburbs of Vienna, far from the other famous composers who chose to hand down their luncheon vouchers in that particular city.

Well there was a tiny placard at the base, stating something to the effect of "honorary grave of the City of Vienna".

As for the Klimts, there were quite a few of them on (permanent) display at the Belvedere http://www.belvedere.at/ - there was also one Gallen-Kallela there, a forest scene with pine trees and sunlight on remnants of snow. Funnily enough, Mr Mahler was sketched

by "our" Akseli, the time he was visiting Finland on his conductor tours ... he met Sibelius too. IIRC Mahler got on much better with Gallen-K.

Maybe it was his twelve schapps before the soup...

Well, just Vienna - and a day trip to Bratislava as the two towns are so close to each other (a scant hour by train). Since this was in July, there wasn't much going on music-wise, every Viennese orchestra seemed to be on holidays. Including the seldom-heard Kazoo Ensemble of the Lipizzaner stallions. But I guess if you want to go and hear the "famous" local Philharmoniker you'd need to reserve tickets well beforehand.

Even without the music, Vienna is well worth a visit on its own. I have never been to Bratislava.
