Doctor says blood tests (for creatine, potassium, natrium) are normal. Puumala virus is negative. But still there is protein in the urine.

Back to the doc on Monday for more testing
Humm... Not sure how certain it is that it is not myyräkuume. I only received confirmed diagnosis on the day I was sent home. Not sure why it took so long...

Or perhaps doctor just did not bother to tell. Not sure.
It might have something to do with tests using antibodies to check it. If body has not killed the virus it has no antibodies.

Doctor says creatine levels are normal. But she did run some other blood tests that need some time to produce a culture. Perhaps that will tell us something?

Now i'm trying to cope with him being angry with me for not letting him go out with his mates. He says he feels ok now, so he should be allowed to go out. Only trouble is that i know sometimes those "mates" of his bring alcohol with them. So i'm keeping him with me until i know he's stronger. No arguments about it.

I weighed him today. He's lost 7 kilos this week ... he's got to be as weak as a kitten.

Ask him if he enjoys dying or ending up in wheelchair. Feeling ok is not sign you are ok. Specially with condition like that.

Official diagnosis - puumala virus. Kidneys still malfunctioning, and doctor will continue to monitor over the next couple of weeks.

Doctor said there have been many more cases this year than previous years because there are lots of those little animals (voles?) around this year. Apparently you breathe the virus in.

Ha! At last you've got a diagnosis. But why was the puumula test NEGATIVE last Friday then?

Is he on any medication? Back to school?

Dr.House visited on the 8th...

problem with the myyräkuume is in some people it is like a bad flu and with others it gets really nasty, the test isn't foolproof at all - and it just requires going to some old shed really...

Now I'm confused... what's the difference between puumula and myyräkuume: one's vole and t'other's mole? But are the symptoms and the treatment the same? Is there a vaccine?

We have voles and moles at the mökki and the kids are always crawling around inside the barn/garage (eg: pingpong table is inside) anything I can do to prevent them catching something?

think Finnish: a vole is a "forest-mole". hence "mole fever"... (even the vole is not related to a mole)
Myyräkuume (nephropathia epidemica) kuuluu munuaisoireisten verenvuotokuumeiden tautiryhmään. Taudin aiheuttaa Suomessa Puumala-virus, joka leviää metsämyyrän välityksellä ympäristöönsä.

basically theres not much you can do... http://www.poliklinikka.fi/?page=3845340&id=3715284
says statistically your hubby is in the risk group, rather than the kids

For me vole and mole are one and same. We speak of little critters either way.
Puumala-virus is what causes mole-fever. I lives in this little fellow: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mets%C3%A4myyr%C3%A4

Virus is in their droppings, which dry and then become fine dust which can float in the air and inhaled.

Reason why it may have been negative is because they do not test VIRUS, but instead natural ANTIBODIES produced by your body. If your immune system is not yet killing the virus, there are no antibodies to detect. When they appear, virus is on it's way to death.

No vaccination. But being sick is guarantee of immunity for life.

(same which Purs here said but with more words and stuff)

She asked the lab for further cultures to be done, and tests for other (related strands) over the weekend. Got the results back this morning. No medication - just the monitoring, and it's October break this week for us. She says he needs to rest a lot, eat as much and as healthily as possible, absolutely no exercise - all these for at least a week, perhaps more depending on today's kidney function tests.

I actually know very little about the differences between puumala and myyrakuume. All i know is what she said this morning - that the disease is diagnosed a lot this year because of all the little animals, and that you breathe it in if you are in areas where they live. There's no vaccine and if you get it once, you can't get it again. Some get it badly and some are luckier - perhaps depending on the strength of your immune system. As far as treatment goes, he hasn't had any, but he hasn't had it so badly that the kidneys are malfunctioning to the point where he needs to be hospitalised. It's not contagious from person to person.

It might be good to talk to your school nurse about it, or your family doctor, especially if your kids hang around cottages and nuuksio and the like. My son caught it either at a cottage near Kauniainen or at nuuksio on an overnight excursion with the school. I'll be notifying the school in case they want to inform other parents of the possibilities of catching it on this excursion, as they do the same one each year.

Yes, it would be a good idea for you to notify the school. Finnish parents would probably have heard of it and/or recognise it, but if a foreign family travels back to Japan/America/Spain/Wherever for the autumn break and then they get sick their local GP might not have a clue what it is. Maybe the school could put a mention in the newsletter.

I remember being in the UK on vacation (we were living in Hungary at the time) and a friend called me to say there was an outbreak of Meningitis at the school in Budapest and I should get my kids vaccinated ASAP. The local health centre in the UK was terrific and vaccinated my kids for free, same day.
