Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
Just checking flight prices and Finnair are off the scale for almost all of December and January to London (775EUR + the rip-off 20EUR online 'booking fee'). Does anyone know why it's so much more expensive than normal? Have they reduced the amount of daily flights?
It's cheaper to fly to New York! (759EUR)
N.
PS 90EUR rtn to LGW with Easyjet.

Yeah, I noticed that Stockmann were offering nought in Hullut Päivät (we used Crazy tickets to go back to UK for Xmas last year).
Maybe Finnair has made an agreement with EasyJet....

I often check with BA website and also Expedia for the same finnair flights and usually find much cheaper.
Although that said last time i got tickets to the UK it was cheapest on expedia, where as BA was 700 Euro's one way

Re: Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
I just got flights over xmas with points (and had to book business class), and most of the SAS/ BA/ Finnair flights are near fully booked over the peak period.
...so the expensive tickets are left and the airlines have a chance to make some money, and maybe will stay in business for a bit longer (but good for them that the fuel prices have gone down somewhat... just a shame that their stocks did as well)!
But nearly 800 Euros is still worth it for replenishing the Branston pickle, salt and vinegar crisps, sage and onion stuffing, yorkshire pudding mix, Caramac, steam pudding, Tescos low fat caesar dressing and mint jelly stocks

I just had to check how much it would cost to order salt and vinegar crisps from UK. Answer: crapload, shipping costs about the same as crisps themselves, but it still seems that one would get over 30kg of Walkers Salt n Vinegar Crisps for 800€. *drool*Mölkky-Fan wrote:I just got flights over xmas with points (and had to book business class), and most of the SAS/ BA/ Finnair flights are near fully booked over the peak period.

Last Xmas with Hullut Päivät tickets all 5 (five) of us flew to LHR and back for less than 1000 euro.
Maybe the price you are prepared to pay for a ticket is inversely proportional to the time you have lived abroad (27 yrs in my case)....
Re: Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
As Mölkky-Fan wrote, presumably only the expensive tickets are left, everyone wants to travel around Xmas & New Year, so you have to get those booked a loong time in advance, 5 months min. I'd say.neil wrote:Just checking flight prices and Finnair are off the scale for almost all of December and January to London (775EUR + the rip-off 20EUR online 'booking fee'). If you are willing to travel in November... have a very early Xmas, then there's a Finnair Plus offer a.t.m.
Or you can risk it and hope that they have a promotion to try and get rid of their remaining seats ... they often do x000 plus points + €250-€300 to Manchester or London.Finnair Plus / Offers & News / Offers and benefits / Finnair Plus offers wrote:London – from €185 + 850 Plus points from Helsinki
Book by 29 November 2008. Travel 1-30 November 2008!

Re: Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
The conventional wisdom on this side of the pond is:
"... The airlines are flying 180,000 fewer seats each day by the end of the year and 70 million less in 2009. Such capacity cuts only give the airlines more pricing power. Ticket prices will not be dropping as the planes fill up"
It does seem the high cost is often found to be due to the taxes and surcharges being added to ticket prices.
We're traveling to Europe for the winter vacation and our per-person ticket price broke down to: Fare=$484 ; Surcharges=$586.

Get a job with an airline and that ticket will cost you about 100e return!
Maybe even less, i haven't actually checked...
I got a return ticket to Australia for a bit over 250e and one for mum which cost about 460e.

Well, only 13 years abroad for me... (and I paid with points, so it was nearly free for me!) but I am afraid the days of cheap flights at popular times is over unless you book very early... in fact I think cheap flights will be a thing of the past soon. The airlines have been struggling for sometime now, and as more airlines go bust the number of seats reduce and with market forces etc, then mrshourula's comments below come to fruition.penelope wrote:Mölkky-Fan wrote: But nearly 800 Euros is still worth it....

Upphew, when taking the weight of 2 large jars of Branston, Caesar dressing, mint jelly and treacle pudding and the postage costs into the mix I think I still will not be so far off!
...and then Behnfords: 4 Euros for fuel, 8 Euros for parking, they do not have all the food but still say 50 Euros for what they have, 733 Euros for the fact that I feel ripped off everytime I go there... so, see, already more expensive and I did not get all that I wanted!
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.
Re: Finnair JFK: 759EUR LHR: 800EUR????
Booking through eBookers.fi turns always cheaper than booking directly from Finnair, as their online booking fee is only 9 EUR (Finnair.fi 20 EUR with a credit card and 15 EUR when paying through your webbank).
Finnair has usually always had Christmas offers for flights to their European destinations (ca mid Dec - 6 Jan), but who knows whether they will offer them this year...

OR just go EasyJet, like Neil mentioned! I got my return ticket to London for 73 euros inclusive, flying in on Dec 20th and back to Helsinki on Jan 4th. Why in the world would anyone pay 730 euros more for the same flight??
