Question about Midwifery Education in Finland
Question about Midwifery Education in Finland
Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions regarding schools, programs, etc for one to become a midwife? I am having trouble searching online for midwifery education programs in Finland. I am a dual citizen, but haven't been raised in Finland, therefore my Finnish isn't good enough yet to find such schooling programs.
Kiitos!

Saying that, when our last one was born, there was a foreign student helping out. She was being instructed in English, so I guess her finnish wasn't very hot.

Checking the database of international programmes in Finland http://www.studyinfinland.fi/studying/i ... ammes.html , I have the impression that you cannot currently study midwifery in English in Finland.
Generally, midwives are educated at polytechnics (Ammattikorkeakoulu=AMK), for a list of all polytechnics, have a look here:

@Mook: I would think that the foreign student was probably on an internship in Finland? (at least I've heard that such internships are quite common)

Indeed the Midwifery programs are only taught in Finnish. The other option is to do the Registered Nurse education in English, while learning as much Finnish as you can. Then apply for the special route that allows RN to train as Midwife in 1 year or so.
Re: Question about Midwifery Education in Finland
Thanks for all of the comments and information. What I'd like to do is to live in Finland for a year or two in order to brush up on my Finnish before midwifery studies. I'll take a look at the link for the polytechniques. Perhaps I'll even consider the RN route. My finnish is at about a nine or ten year old child's level and it is my aiden kieli - growing up we spoke Finglish at home - so I hope it won't take me years and years before I can get by well enough to study!

well that RN path would then definitely "keep you out of mischief" as well as give you opportunities to study the language (instead of scratching your butt at home waiting for a place in some class)

Indeed. You'd get the opportunity to speak Finnish as well during your work placements.Pursuivant wrote:well that RN path would then definitely "keep you out of mischief" as well as give you opportunities to study the language (instead of scratching your butt at home waiting for a place in some class)
