They have just posted the league tables.
The Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings identified these to be the world's top 100 universities in 2008. These institutions represent 20 countries with Israel represented for the first time. Whilst North America dominates with 42 universities, Europe and Asia Pacific are well represented with 36 and 22 respectively.
Helsinki is 91st.
I do not find any other Finnish Universities in the top 200.

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.

Well I guess the forthcoming huippuyliopisto (Aalto University) with all the huippuihmiset will do the Lordi tricksinikettu wrote:I do not find any other Finnish Universities in the top 200.

An interesting point of view here

(just for the record - I personally care not much for this kind of league tables, but posted this to provide an alternative look at the THE-QS thingy...)

New Zealand, Finland, Ireland and Australia are the most efficient producers of top universities, according to a University World News analysis of the latest THE-QS ranking of the world's top 500 universities...

To be utterly b*tchy, I have no idea what department or faculty they are using
for these types of studies, but the one I'm in is a bloody nightmare. I'm not even
sure next year what my Master's will end up having on it when I finally graduate.
AFAIK my department is merging with the English Philology dept to become one
big English dept, but as the University is p*ss-poor about notifying anyone of anything,
I have no bloody clue. All we get are roundabout, vague press releases like:
http://www.helsinki.fi/ajankohtaista/yo ... 2006.shtml
and
the English Phil dept.
When I was in Spain studying and people asked me about HY, I told them flatout
to go elsewhere as there were no resources to teach the ERASMUS students Finnish
in Kouvola and without Finnish they couldn't really do much of anything related to
translation there then.
If HY made it to 91 on the list, I don't want to study at the ones below it on the list,
that's for sure!

Hopefully the level of teaching will dramatically improve once it's merged with- Konsistori päätti lakkauttaa humanistisen tiedekunnan Kouvolassa sijaitsevan käännöstieteen laitoksen hallinnollisena yksikkönä 31.7.2009 lähtien ja yhdistää käännöstieteen laitoksen toiminnot tiedekunnan muihin kielten laitoksiin. Kääntämisen oppiaineet sijoitetaan laitoksille vastaavan kieliaineen ja kirjallisuusaineen yhteyteen. Siten esimerkiksi englannin kielen laitokseen liitetään Kouvolasta tulevat englannin kääntäminen ja tulkkaus. Nykyiset käännöstieteen laitoksella pääaineena opetettavat oppiaineet säilyvät muutoksessa ennallaan. Lisätietoja antaa suunnittelija Kari Huittinen, p. (09) 191 24172.

Well, I was pleased to see my dear old alma mater...(which I always though was pretty good...lots of "foreign" professors when I attended...) ...came in tied for 34th..
...and ranks seven higher than U. of T. (...Toronto)...
