GB aims for Olympic Medal in Ice Hockey

Post by sinikettu » Wed Nov 05, 2008 8:22 am

Nearly posted this in the pub but it is serious..
Team GB is going to the Polish town of Sanok, where they face Japan, Romania and hosts Poland in pre-qualification.
Perhaps they have dreams of stuffing Finland and Sweden in the 2010 winter olympics.
Unlike the summer olympics ,GB golds at the winter games have been only 9 in history (most of them from Ice Skaters such as Robin Cousins, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean)

That wasn't ice hockey that was football on a frosty day in the park

and... allegedly.. they were about as British as Greg Rusedski (just after being busted for mömmö). Whilst only ONE of them wasn't "born in the UK", it seems most were either ex-pats in Canada or the sons of ex-pats in Canada, had dual passports, and had more or less grown up on hockey. One assumes they'd need a similar arrangement now in order to be able to pull off anything like the feats of 72 years ago. Except now it would do no harm to have a few Slovaks, the odd Russian, a Czech and a Finn or two as well, and a couple of Swedes on the roster to poke the puck home in the dying seconds.

Can this be arranged?

Sigh- that's exactly what we don't want! There's a huge conflict over whether we should be developing our young British players as an investment in the future of our game, or just calling up the ex pats.
The women, mind you, just missed out in the Olympic qualifiers. They are a strong team based on homegrown talent.
