one query

Post by student01 » Thu Oct 23, 2008 4:21 pm

I am an international student (non-EU) at polytechnics whose study is about finnished except thesis which is pending. My query which I do not want to put at my college is that what if I don't complete the thesis, will I get the resident permit extended on the ground that I have not completed my study? Just a dirty little trick to stay in Finland one more year. Will that work? Thank you for your views and suggestions in advance!

if you are about to finish your undergraduation..then why dont you get into post grad... by this you can extend your residence permit legally... there are other study options available i guess....

you can finish your study and then you can apply for an extension on the ground that ur looking for a job
What happens after the studies are completed?

After completing the studies, the student may remain in Finland if he or she can be granted a new residence permit on other grounds. The permit may be granted, for example for continuing studies within the same field or on the basis of family ties or employment.

A foreigner who has received a degree in Finland can also get a residence permit for search for work. The permit can be granted as an extended permit for six (6) months.

Tricky bits:

The polytechnics' (UAS) Master's programmes require a Bachelor's followed by three (3) years of work experience.

Then again, applying to university Master's programmes... could be an option, but the big question is (and you'll need to check this from the university offering the Master's you'd be interested in) whether your UAS Bachelor's will be recognised as an equivalent of a university Bachelor's...

on the contrary, if I wanted to have the wicked student kicked out, I'd said "sure, go ahead, just say you haven't finished your studies"

well you usually have to complete a bachelors degree before you do your masters, unless you are studying under the old system?

Bachelors (or what used to be bachelors) is the same as the beginnings of masters. Same studies, just a couple of years more of those for masters.
