Thanks!

Haven’t seen a mesh variety before, but the “normal” ones are called pohjaventtiilin sihti (lit. “bottom valve sifter”, “drain sifter”) in the Finnish plumber lingo.

When buying one, you would probably need to specify whether it is for a kitchen sink (=tiskiallas) or a hand-washing basin in your bathroom (=käsienpesuallas) or for something else (a bath tub, perhaps̀? (=kylpyamme))... and because you’re specifically looking for one with a steel mesh, which is not the usual configuration, you should mention that, too...

So the full description would become something like this:
  • tiskialtaan pohjaventtiilin sihti, tiheällä metalliverkolla
“a sink strainer with a dense metal mesh”
  • käsienpesualtaan pohjaventtiilin sihti, tiheällä metalliverkolla
“a hand-washing basin strainer with a dense metal mesh”
  • kylpyammeen pohjaventtiilin sihti, tiheällä metalliverkolla
“a bathtub strainer with a dense metal mesh”
The diameter would probably need to be specified as well... Or just remove the old one and take it with you in the shop, so they can see and measure it for themselves.

You might also take a photo of that mesh product linked to the above with you, as a sample... carrying it around in a digital camera, for example. (See this page for a software product that can put arbitrary images – even those saved from random web pages – back into a digital camera; allowing you to use your camera as a portable image viewer. The demo version is functional but watermarks the images. Or you could just take a photo of your monitor as a low-tech solution.)

Try your local plumber. Keywords for Yellow Pages or other directory searches, such as 02.fi: putkiliikkeitä, putkiasennuksia, putkitöitä, LVI-tarvikkeita.

Generic hardware stores might have them too, of course. (K-rauta, Rautia, Starkki, etc.)

I am not walking into a shop full of plumbers and asking for something to sift my bottom valve!

Fnarr! Fnarr!", "Warf! Warf!", "Tsssk Tsssk", "Chortle Chortle"
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Bauhaus or K-Rauta usually have these kind of things.
Check if they have what you need before you go to a plumber and pay double or triple the price of what it should really cost.

also in Anttila (in the section where they also sell all kinds of hooks (for e.g. towels)), Clas Ohlson and I'd think even in the big citymarkets...
