Source of wood for carving?

Post by sarahh » Sat Dec 06, 2008 3:31 pm

Hi all,

I am looking for a source of linden/basswood and other types of wood that are good for carving. I am in the Ekenas/Tammisaari area. Helsinki would be OK too.

Any ideas?

cheers,

Sarah

so you're looking for blocks? depending on how big... don't know if its used and for what though - was thinking for blocks of exotic woods you'd have boatmakers or cabinetmakers around who might have some leftovers, even big blocks of wood... but a linden is usually a rot-wood you make firewood out of... so maybe if someone is felling one you need to be ready around and then cure it... the lumber yeards of course may be able to get some... someplace.. but thats a bit like importing sand to arabia and tea to china...

Depends on the size of piece you want. If you are looking for something small... e.g. the size of a piece of A4, then local carpenters or joinery firms may be able to sell you or keep a few off-cuts for you... otherwise try for example http://www.puukeskus.fi/fi/Tuotteet/Jalopuut/

One more idea..
Most Finnish towns have a kasi ja taidekoulu.
Most have very good woodworking departments, I bought some Birch from one once, worth a try

Thats what I mentioned, but its not called the Tammisaari Taidekoulu. Its also an exhibition center.
and Fiskars is a little bit of a drive and when she dont have a car it could be challenging..
you can also try these:
