Good luck with all of this. I guess its too late to say you should have signed the contract before you quit your other job but of course that still wouldn't have stopped him from firing you during the trial period. I was once on my way to sign a contract with a company in Tampere when they called me and said they couldn't hire me due to a conflict of interest. To me that was total BS but I was happy I hadn't told the company I was working for that I was quitting. Hehe, actually I ended up going to work for them 3 months later when the original issue was worked out but I realized quickly what kind of company they were and how they treat their employees and moved on after that. Its a rough world out there though, and most employers aren't out there to make it easy for us! I wish you the best though and at least you are going to remain unemployed and maybe something better comes along soon!

So, had a meeting today and 1 possible route to take is I being paid €6000 as my 3 months probation wages and we call it quits now. He is open to paying this any way I like, as in 1 lump sum or €2000 a month for 3 months or €1000 for 6 months and so on, so what would be the best way to ensure the taxman takes the smallest amount and what could the payment be declared as? I am not trying to avoid paying any tax on this, just what is the best way to do it and I will be checking Vero website when I get a chance. Thanks for your opinions so far and Happy Christmas and peaceful new year.

It can be up to you. When you get your tax card you have two ways of paying taxes. Type A: after you make X amount of money in a whole year, your percentage goes up and you pay the higher percentage the rest of the year. Or type B: after you make X amount of money in a day, week, or month, then your percentage goes up. For me I like having it like type A. In your case, and with this guy, I would take it all now so that you get it all. Don't take any chances with him, you never know, if you spread it out over a few months, what if he pays one month and then says screw it and doesn't pay you any more. Take it all when you have the chance. If you tax card is like Type A then your percentage will stay the lower one for the whole amount. And that is also something you can change during the year, you can then call, or do it online and get a new updated tax card to the way you want and give that to your next employer. Oh, and if you are spreading it out over several months, and have another job, you will then have to have one of the two employers deduct a different amount of taxes for having a 2nd job which is also a higher amount. Take it all now in the sense that he would be your only and current employer, then give the tax card to your next job and your tax rate will stay the lowest (never low enough :( but as low as it can be I guess) I hope that made sense! Good luck!

well, if you get money after the 3 months - of course your unemployment benefits will go down. if it can be marked as some sort of "contract settlement" or whatever and not "salary" as such... oh and now do go if you have not to the työvoimatoimisto to get your blue card as your 3 months starts calculating from the day you inform them. and you need to do ten the jive with your union and all...

Don't worry about tax. Worry about him.
So take all the money as soon as you can.
