I've been in Finland for almost 5 years now, and as my employer heads through the YT restructuring process I slowly understand that union membership is something that I should have arranged and if I am lucky enough to have a job at the start of next year, should do so with some urgency ...
Are there any good resources for the selection of appropriate unions - are there any advantages of specific unions?
I work in BioIT within the pharmaceutical industry - any pointers would be very warmly received!
Cheers
Stephen

Re: Union membership
and what good does an union do? the YT train comes and gives golden hanshakes to the management and golden showers to the workers...
basically unless you have a big enough company to have its own union then it goes by profession... usually you look according to which TES you are hired and then go for that TES union as thats whose rules are used. and then you join an unemployment fund which you don't have to belong to an union to belong to a fund, and not belonging to a fund is classified somewhere along with being criminally insane and not having a homeowners insurance... as unless you've contributed 10 months you're on KELA base = jack all. the whole "system of dole" is explained pretty well here on YTK pages. (they're 67 euros per calendar year)

Re: Union membership
The "criminal insanity" aspect here is what is driving this question - there was a very horrible realisation
of what unemployment on state benefits means, especially with the now unfashionably large mortgage (and no longer quite as valuable house).

yes, well, it is one of these things *everybody knows* kind of, so nobody will explain them to you... until its too late. now I suppose you also skipped the unnecessary insurances on the mortgage as well... so anyways join the YTK 1.1.and hope you won't get laid off before October... if you get laid off before that... I mean you *have* had your feelers out? usually the rats leave the ship before the wreck, the sailors afterwards, and rats are said to be intelligent.
