Anyone here know much about Cross Country Skiing?

Post by rob34 » Mon Dec 29, 2008 11:58 am

I just bought some skiis yesterday and gave them a test run in Tampere.

The snow on the path was already quite packed and icy, so I ended up doing a lot more skating than traditional parallel. Is this ok? Will it jack up my gear if my skiis are for "perinteinen"?

Also, when I got home, I noticed the pohjat of my skiis were already pretty scuffed. Is this normal, or was the terrain I was skiing on too icy, and should I stick to deeper snows?

Now to the waxing: When I'm applying the fast glide wax via iron, the instructions I found said "sulaa vahaa vanhalla silitysraudalla suksien pohjaan", or something to that effect. The operating modifier here being "pohjaan" as opposed to "pohjalle". I kind of got the impression that I was supposed to put the iron directly to the ski's pohja, but then I figured that would just be nutty and I'd screw up my new skiis. Instead, I held the point of the iron above the ski, melted the tip of the wax, then rubbed it a little bit on the base of the ski. Then back to the iron and back to the ski. Excess from the melted wax would drip off the tip of the iron and onto the ski. Is this correct? When I scraped off the wax, it looked like none of the wax was still on the pohja, but they seemed slick enough when I gave them a test run in some deeper snow.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any tips.
