Post by sharon sagiv » Tue Dec 30, 2008 4:52 pm

Could anyone recomend a soccer class after school for boys in Espoo. They are 10 and 8 years old. One is mad about Chelsea and one Manchester united.
Thank you ,

OK... so you just arrived in Finland.

There is no such thing as "soccer classes" in Finland.

You join a club. So if you are in Espoo then you have the choice of Honka (the biggest),EPS and HooGee (Haukilahti). Maybe EBK also. There's probably half a dozen clubs in Espoo. You sign in blood on the dotted line and hand over your life savings ie: the annual club fee. Sometimes there is a monthly charge. Each team organises their own fundraising. You will also be expected to buy all the kit, sell raffle tickets and bake cakes etc.

Then your son(s) can start playing football. You will have to join the federation SPL (the fee ranges depending on age but is approx 80e each for younger kids), then you need insurance which can be ordered when you join the federation. You team manager will tell you about this.

So email the club first of all. Honka, as I said, is the biggest. But if you are living in West End/Haukilahti/Iirislahti (just a guess) then you might want to consider HooGee, smaller but friendly and well-managed and they speak Swedish as well as FInnish. Each club has many teams, best to choose one that trains near your home. Teams are according to age group (year of birth).

Also try using the search function on this forum as there have been posts before about junior football.

There are usually training sessions 2-3 times a week and then matches home and away (but usually in the Greater Helsinki region). Junior football is NOT a hobby. It is a serious undertaking for parents and players. It will rule your life. Believe me, I was treasurer of a Honka team for several years and still have one son (born 96) who plays for Honka. When I had two sons both playing for Honka I felt like my whole life (almost) was ruled by football. But it was fun. And the boys enjoyed it. And have a ton of medals to show for it.

Since school starts up again next week, I suggest you hold your horses until the boys have settled into school and made a few friends then maybe one of their friends who plays could take them along to his team. A lot of kids at ISH live along the southern Espoo corridor and I guess a few are already playing football.

And er... training will be in Finnish. There are a few teams with British dads coaching them, so you could ask around. But my suggestion would be to get some recommendations from other mums/kids at ISH.

And.... if they have never played before then they might find it difficult to get into a team. The 8 yr old should be OK, but the 10 year old may have to practise with the team before they agree to let him in. Yes. Crazy.

At least Honka has teams for 6 year olds. And ice hockey starts even younger. My 6 year old had trouble getting into an ice hockey team when we arrived, even though he had been skating in Hungary.
