Wife's Residence Permit

Post by niks10 » Tue Dec 30, 2008 3:59 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge to help us out. I am a dual Fin/Can and my wife is Canadian. She has her residence permit here, and currently looking for work in the Kouvola/Lahti areas. My line of work offers opportunites on short term contracts all throughout Europe. Does her residence permit give her any opportunities to work in other EU countries ie Germany, UK, France etc? Or do we have to stay in Finland until she is able to get her EU citizenship? Thanks and look forward to hearing from you

If you want to absolutely sure, perhaps you should try to check from the relevant national immigration office. However, I'm pretty sure these rights are the same in different EU countries and if you look at the Finnish Aliens Act (ulkomaalaislaki)
http://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2004/20040301
(in English for those who need that: http://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/kaannokset ... 040301.pdf )
and its Chapter 10, especially paragraphs 158a and 164, it seems to me clear that were you a for example a German citizen coming here with a Canadian wife for work, she would be allowed to be employed as well. So, I think it should be OK for you as well.

Just read it carefully, only when you are living and working there...and its always good to check with the registrar of that country( or county of that country) on what the regulations are there..
Its easier said than done in practice..

so just remember then that you are a Finn then if anybody asks and not Canadian - as the first rule is "do not confuse the officials"...

Something wicked this way comes."
