Website payment solution

Post by nkm » Fri Jan 09, 2009 5:51 pm

Do Finnsh banks (or other cost effective companies) provide "Website Payment Solution", i.e. some custom code, that I can add in my website, so that users can pay directly with credit/debit cards & money directly deposited in my bank account.

I guess there is Paypal/Google Checkout, but Finland maybe small market for them, and charges being high, perhaps?

Banks offer services that provide integrated payments services (customer buys, goes to the bank page to pay and returns to website) but you do need an agreement (don't know if with each bank or just your bank) and they tend to charge a monthly fee and a small commission so you might have to weight in the cost and benefits. Many companies send invoices via e-mail and expect their customers to pay them on their own.

This is how nordea describes their e-payment services:
* A buyer submits an order on a company’s website from which the company’s system forms an electronic invoice.
* The customer switches over to Netbank, accepts the invoice with his or her access codes and returns to the company’s website.
* The payment is transferred to the company’s account immediately.
* Purchases paid for as e-payments are shown as reference payments on the company’s bank account.
See the T&C in this pdf

Paypal is quite popular in some sectors, but that will depend more on the type of clients you'll get. Eg, webhosting companies offer paypal payment solutions.

These are the people I used when the company I worked for set up its own webstore: http://www.luottokunta.fi/en/ We let these guys handle the payment methods and used Wosbee.com for the layouts etc. It works pretty well :)

they provide the interface spec's - you write the code yourself. All of them work using web-redirect. Once apon a time my company did a project around this area - the code is still lying around somewhere...

For bigger webshops there is this great company named "Verkkomaksut Oy". They provide almost all finnish banks trough their system. Read more in english: http://www.verkkomaksut.fi/index.php?id=24

For small business / personal use paypal is working fine in Finland, though it's mostly used by geeks. ;-)

This is something I am looking into as well.
I did check the information Nordea has, but as far as I understand, this is only for payments inside of Finland.

What I would need is for people from all over the world to be able to pay with for example their credit card. Paypal and other payment gateways do that too, but I am looking more into a system directly from the site, for which you would need some kind of merchant account(i.e. clients never leave your site to complete the payment).

I know that for example 2checkout.com accepts credit card payments from all over the world as well, but then clients are taken away from your site to pay at 2checkout, and that is not what I want.

I will need to contact Nordea and see if they have any solutions like this as well.

On the other hand do you think like a geek? Personally, I'd rather pay through some trusted broker like PayPal than give my credit card number to some obscure guy above the arctic circle. How do I know the payments/numbers are safe? See I am a paranoid geek. As for invoices all you need is to have your IBAN number and BIC and you can get the payments into your bank account in the euro zone just as through the giro system here. If you have a business account though you must remember to generate the reference numbers.

Actually, the best solution is to have more than one option available. Paypal will be an option for me because that is one of the most widely used and trusted payment methods online.
But, you also have to keep in mind that not all clients like Paypal or like the idea that they are taken away from the business site, that is a fact.
So if you can combine a payment gateway like Paypal together with for example onsite credit card processing, then I believe you have the best options.

I get the impression that it's the combination Ebay-Paypal that @#$% things up.
I've been using Paypal for years without any sort of problems (knock on wood)

Yes Karel, you are probably right. I have been using Paypal for many years as well and have not encountered any problems either.
