you can go to http://www.tulli.fi and get the statistics... just have a thumb rule for money for a few grand in tax and other fees you might survive... they give only estimates so you don't know definitely

You aren't as trying as Henrik! Here is the page of what other people have paid.

http://www.tulli.fi/fi/03_Yksityishenki ... /index.jsp

Pick a recent month and try to find a car of similar age and km driven... to get an idea.

Ultimately the tax you pay will depends upon the valuation given by 1 tax official at the harbour who will inspect your car when you bring it into FInland.

i know it sounds unfair or cheating but if they valu my car so is it better to remove some parts of car and get it later by post and bring the car to finland as a crashed car which devalue the car ..

Though I was more thinking about the savings in import tax of whipping out the radio (no radio maybe means €50 less tax) vs the cost of posting the radio from Germany = €20 postage.

All that titting around just to save a maximum of a few 10s of € ... what a knobjockey.

This is crazy, I thought my idea of living in Sweden with my newly purchased cheap car for 6mths to avoid the tax was ridiculous

I'm in the same situation (moving from Germany to Finland in January 2010) and I'm also apparently an idiot because I'm not sure I understand the homepage correctly.

We have two cars, a 1999 Audi TT and a 2007 VW Golf.

What I understood was:

-- No VAT as both cars are older
-- Car Tax must be paid on both and it will be the value of the car if it were sold in FINLAND (not Germany) minus a maximum of € 13,450. So in my eyes, it'll be a few thousand euro for each car.

Can I assume this is correct?

Well if the two cars are owned by two separate people, then they're removals, which isn't importing. Importing is if you live in Finland and go buy a car in Germany.

you must own the car for 1 and haif year then you can import it for free and you cant sell them until 2 years in finland but each car should be owned by one person ..

Two things wrong there. The rules are available here...

http://www.tulli.fi/en/finnish_customs/ ... 008_en.pdf

The car should have been owned for 6 months (section5.3.1)
Cars imported as removals goods can´t be sold for 3 years (section 5.3.5)
