Delivery service

Post by DMC » Sun Jan 18, 2009 5:16 pm

I am investigating a new business idea and one thing I will need it it goes ahead is a delivery service. Any suggestions?
The products are likely to be large, fairly heavy and breakable.
Delivery could be to anywhere in Finland.
I am based in central Finland.
Speed of delivery would not be a high priority.
Reliability & quality would be important.

whomever you go with remember to read the small print on "damages" and who pays for what... like the P.O pays pissall... also if you deliver well-packed (wrapped on pallet) vs. something stuck into a box with a "kick around" label - the pricing is sometimes dramatically different. some companies quote only their "standard sizing" and don't deal with miscellaneous objects

Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to check those points if this idea progresses. At present I am at the feasibility stage and I have no idea who operates in this market. This is a major stumbling block, since it is no good making a good product if I can't get it to the customer.
You mentioned the post office. Someone else suggested them, which surprised me. I wouldn't have expected the post office to deal with the large deliveries I have in mind. Do they offer a collection service? The items will be too big/heavy/awkward to think about popping them down to my local post office. I need a company that will collect the goods from me and take them to the customer. Probably on some form of pallet.

they do collect at posti too... but pallet service... only ones I'd get off my head would be vr cargo, transpoint and nurminen but they might be too big...

Not sure what you mean by "too big". Do you mean they would be too big to deal with my small company? Or that they would only deal with packages that are bigger than you think I will need to send?

well it depends on the volume totally... some companies don't give you the time of day unless you're talking of containers... one option is the "bus cargo" i.e. Matkahuolto and yeah, no they don't deliver pallets "on the bus" but with a pickup truck and yes they have delivery and pickup services and they do reach quite extensively...

Thanks to both of you. Now I have somewhere to start so I can check out what my options are. Fingers crossed.

Another idea is to ask other businesses who they use (I'm thinking pianos, antique dealers......). Always good to get a recommendation from another business. And also good to ask them for recommendations on who NOT to use.

Personal experience: Transpoint will @#$% up when delivery goes around lake Saimaa. So when stuff gets send from example from Oulu to SE part of Finland, you can be sure that you need to call at least once to get the delivery done. I have heard good things about them in other parts of Finland, but...

Personal experience trumps just about everything, so thanks for that, and I'll also follow Penelope's idea for the same reason. Mind you, when we asked the local antique dealer here to do some restoration work on some old furniture he turned up with an open pickup to take it away. I won't be asking for transport recommendations from him!
