Crisco/Shortening in Behnford's

Post by AlexInHelsinki » Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:38 am

Just what the title says...saw a few posts where people were looking for shortening. Apparently they have it at Behnford's...this will hopefully be confirmed tomorrow when I go to pick some up to make icing...

Do you buy it? I thought you would make your own.

I bought some before Xmas intending to make a traditional iced Xmas cake. But never got round to it (we made a log instead). Still in the cupboard. Sell by date is July 09 :? So maybe I will make an Easter cake instead. Or maybe a big five-0 cake for my dh's next birthday

This afternoon I called Behnford's to make sure they had Crisco in the store, and they had ONE left! Had them put it aside for me (phew!) and made the birthday cake today...icing turned out great. We didn't have any food coloring, so I bought some vacuum-packed beetroot (the kind with the juice) and used a few drops of that to color the icing pink and used a plastic baggie with the corner snipped off as a piping bag; worked a charm. Presented it onstage at Semifinal tonight to the bassist of a band that was touring from the UK, where the candles were promptly blown out during a riff and part of it ended up squarely in the singer's face :ochesey:

We were worried about that too, but it doesn't taste like beetroot one bit. I think you could even make the pink quite a bit darker without any problem.
