Ordering stuff from UK

Post by debonaire » Fri Feb 06, 2009 4:23 pm

I am planning to order a set of alloy wheels from a shop in UK through its online portal...Since this would be my first time buying stuff from outside Finland through internet,I have two concerns regarding the issue:
1.Will i be liable to pay any additional cost towards the purchase? As far as i understand,I would not need to pay any additional cost besides the cost of the product(including VAT)+shipping charges..
2.Internet fraud...How can i make sure that the shop acknowleges my payment and my order is secured so that i do not face any hassles in receiving my order..I do not suspect the shop of any wrong doing but it would be helpful to know the information beforehand so that i can take all precautionary measures,if any, before making the payment...

My friend just ordered over £2000 worth of fishing gear from the Uk, we used paypal this time and credit card last time. The point to this story is DPD who transported the stuff to us, the driver told us that so many Finns are buying wheels from the Uk because they are so much cheaper.

But I think it depends if your credit card company covers you for any probelms, it would be best to check with them and do a google into the comapny to look at their back ground, you post the company name hear and ask if anyone has ever used them or knows of them.

By VAT, I'm assuming you mean to the finnish authorities, not the english ones. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Finnish government want their 22% and won't care if you paid it to the UK.

Depends on where you buy it at. Within EU the seller charges VAT. Now if the seller makes "too much" business to say Finland they then must register with Finland and charge the 22%. If its a one-off sale and seldom so they don't go over the magic threshold per year, they charge whatever the local rate is.

Thanks for the replies...the shops at UK do have some fabulous offers at hand on alloy wheels..at the moment i have zeroed in on the following three websites:
www.performancealloys.com
www.potn.co.uk
www.4wheelplay.co.uk
all these shops do ship products to Finland and they do have a secured online payment system...but i do not have any credible information concerning their reputation and it would be helpful if someone here has any info or experience on dealing with those shops through their online portal..and i would really appreciate if any of you can provide me with the names of some shops dealing in alloy wheels at UK who are credible and trustwothy..

We were looking at cameras in the uk a few months ago, and almost went ahead and bought one from what looked like a large supplier - we regularly buy things online and have never had a problem. Anyway, before we went ahead, and because it was an expensive purchase, my husband googled the name of the company on the website along with the word scam, and we found a LOAD of complaints against this website with warnings to not buy from them. Apparently they take the money and you never get the goods.

I suggest you do the same type of research before you make your purchase, especially if it's a large purchase.

Hi All,
Later this yearI am thinking of importing a heavy item ( excavator bucket) and a few off-road motorcyles from the UK. I have been toying with the idea of offering other interested parties an opportunity to add their items and we all split the cost. I have imported a heavy Item (850KGS) from the UK last year at a very reasonable £450.00 and wondered if anyone watching this Forum was interested. Obviously there would be a few restrictions on what was shipped,
( eg.must have paperwork to show that UK VAT was paid if the item was new etc, and definately nothing from Colombia !!)

So anyone interested let me know (PM is best.)
