Where to Find Americans?
I recently moved from Chicago to Helsinki for an 18-month work rotation. I have enjoyed my first month of living in Finland and have been fortunate to make a few great Finnish friends. I have yet to meet anyone from the U.S., and was curious if anyone had any suggestions regarding bars, restaurants, etc. where Americans tend to frequent. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Where to Find Americans?
well tha pub quiz usually attracts a couple of yanks...... and theres the standup comedy night on the 11th... dunno, if you tried to find some bar with loud arrogant people with no fashion sense then the tourists usually find themselves in the centre like at sports academy but they might be ozzies too or a canuck in disguise...

Thanks for your response. Not really looking for loud, arrogant people...but I will stay away from that. A few coworkers took me to sports academy last week to watch hockey...seemed like a nice place to watch sports. I will look into your other suggestions, and thanks again.

Anyways, the pub quiz is a good place to start.
Now the not really so important q, are you from Chicago itself or the burbs?

For a split second I was waiting for a punchline to the subject of this thread.
We are all used to hiding and claiming to be Canadian due to the long dark 8 years of W. Now that Obama is President, we have to get over it and try to come out of hiding...

I was raised in Wisconsin, and have been living in Chicago for 6 years (the north side, so feel free to wise crack away). Thanks again for the information.

I believe that the Finnish-British Society in Helsinki has some American members. ( The society welcomes all nationalities with active English skills. )
http://www.finnbrit.fi/index.html
They probably have a small membership fee.
They will arrange a golf event on August the 30th :

There are also quite a few American members in Helsinki Expat Meetup :

Both expats and Finns are welcome !
If you want a meetup someday soon you can contact Tommi Laine ( the administrator ) and suggest a meetup.

Couchsurfers in Helsinki have many American members. They will have their weekly meetup today August the 6th :

( Scroll down for a list of members who are coming ! ) It takes only a minute or two to become a member, it does not cost anything and there are no obligations of any kind for members . It is almost too good to be true.
