are you a Kiwi in Finland

Post by FraserinFinland » Wed Feb 04, 2009 10:54 pm

Well it is that time of the year again, Waitangi Day on the 6th of Feb. Pretty simple really
I live in Laajalahti just out of Helsinki, thought it might be an idea to meet up with some other Kiwis for a beer or 3.
Its gonna snow over the weekend so I will wear my Swani rather than the black singlet..

..different place to London eh...where you have the Circle Line pub crawl et al to celebrate Waitangi day, frequented by thousands.

Nice thought FraserinFinland - no takers, but I wouldn't let that bother you, it's a different breed of ex-pat kiwi's way up here in the frozen north - lots of guys who are a bit older with alot of other things on their plate taking up the spare time.

Happy Waitangi Day all the same, and get out there and enjoy the snow...If Anybody Can A Kiwi Can..

I wasn't planning to have a number 7 tram version here in Helsinki, no. But it is a thought...
Waitangi day came, we partied, I even managed to add some spice to Matt's Blog.

:D
By older guys with things on their plate, do you mean your partner is Finnish and you have kids.
One of the things that David Brown commented "As a New Zealander - and journalist - living in Finland, I'm always baffled by stories like this.... whilst often making little effort to adapt to Finnish life. Belonging in a new culture involves more embracing the new than clinging to the old.....Adapting to life in Finland is a brutal experience - the hardest European language, the harshest European climate, and a culture which makes living with bears seem warm and cuddly"
That was his opinion on his 'easy ways to emigrate to Finland' I don't want the brutal experience, if I wanted that sort of stuff I would have got Colin Meads.
I have met other ex pat Kiwi's here, I wouldn't say they are different breed, just less of them. I just wanted to use te internet to broaden the cultural coverage. So to speak.

..what did you think of Finnish Independance Day by comparison to Waitangi Day.

I was considering something of a celebration at work for Waitangi Day, but it kind of felt like celebrating a divorce having spent 3 months working with Parihaka in Taranaki in the mid 90's. So then I thought of bringing along Anzac buscuits on Anzac day, but that seemed a bit dark to explain what the celebration was for.

So I figure, well I'm here now, not there - and Finnish Independance day hits the marks in fairy tale endings so I'll the candles for that one

No worries, my experience of Waitangi day wasn't protesting, just a nice day to go to the beach or watch cricket.
Sitting drinking wine having a nice BBQ.
This is how I got my wife to watch a cricket match, she was expecting the sort of action that an ice hockey game has. I just said take 2 bottles of wine and some magazines, sit in the sun and chat with your friends, only look up if you hear a 'thwack'. I suppose its the same with this. I don't try and pick scabs, just look at the nice parts.
The Suomi Independence day is cool too and I respect that. But I am not going to ignore 23 years of my life either.

Yeah the Anzac biscuits might have been a little hard to explain, I just told them they go well with Kahvi

..we have a long corridor at work that demands a scrunched and taped paper ball with a batsman wielding a carboard tube flattened along the face.

Cricket is like sunshine and a sparkling ocean. You need to have 'been' there - year after year, lunchtime after lunchtime, back-yard after back-yard.

I don't know who got my Lance Cairns dropped shoulder cricket bat, but they scored a classic.
