Hi...This is the same case with me...My first residence permit expired on Dec last year...Your friend doesn't have to fill any new papers...All he has to do is to take his passport with two passport size photographs to the local police station atleast 5 weeks before his first residence permit expires...The cops will take his passport and photos and will issue a new residence permit, most probably for 3 years....He will have to pay 120€ as processing charges..
They had called my wife to confirm that they were issuing me the new residency permit for 3 years after which I can be eligible for a permanent residence permit...So probably his wife will also get the same call..

does this procedure of not needing papers to renew a permit still apply? i went to the police station and asked about getting my permit renewed (expires end of this month) and they gave me the same forms i filled out the first time round. is there an easier way like the one suggested above or must i go through the same process as before?

Was the first resident permit work based or family based?
If it was family based, on marriage, then others have give you some pointers..
If it was work based and you need to change it to marriage based, you ll need to fill out the papers again and get another RP based on marriage for another year!!
( or you could get it for 3 years since you have been living in Finland for 1 year ).

it was based on family ties. just seems a little stupid to fill out the same form as before.

Hey, you are not supposed to wait until your old permit expires! Actually my recent advice from Helsinki police station is to act several months in advance. So how about going to the police station with the photos (and the forms if you have them available) today?

Luckily I have full Adobe Acrobat available so we intend to just change tick marks in couple of the boxes (from the "first residence permit" to "extended permit") and the date and then reprint the whole set....
