Ideas for a day trip from Helsinki
Ideas for a day trip from Helsinki
Can anyone suggest a good day trip using public transport that my friends and I can do from Helsinki? (We have already seen Porvoo) I realise that the weather might not be optimal but friends are visiting...
Thanks!

Fiskars from Hel in winter is pretty dead... and long..( 1.5 hours one way bus ride..and nothing to see that much in winter )..
I suggest to take a trip to Trip to Suomenlinna and If you have 4-5hours, then a trip to Hvittrask in Luoma/kirkkonummi.
The buses go there around 4 times a day and then back..
Another is a train ride to Turku and the taking a walk along the banks of the river n back!!
Tallin is possible if you have the right visa and the right plans with the Ferry ( and you know which one to take from here and back)..
Popular is a 1 hour tram ride in 3T where you can see the city in its full glory during the winter..

Just don't do it on a cold day, or the "eau de wino" might be overpowering...

Fiskars is absolutely beautiful in winter on a sunny day like today (see the webcam on the home page). The river valley and the old buildings are very photogenic in a touristy kind of way. There is an exhibition on in the Copper Smithy at the moment and the restaurant has just re-opened having been refurbished. If you have decent boots, there is a nice walk around the village which is in fact a nature trail through woods, you can download the route fron their website. All the winter opening info is on here:raamv wrote:Fiskars from Hel in winter is pretty dead... and long..( 1.5 hours one way bus ride..and nothing to see that much in winter )..

It is quiet in winter and many of the shops are closed but if you have a car, then you can combine a trip to Fiskars with a stopover in Billnås or even a quick ski in Påminne (we were there on Monday and the skiing was great, 17€ for 4h /adults and reduction with the S-card)

Re: Ideas for a day trip from Helsinki
Personally I'd stick with Helsinki, if they want to do some walking then as suggested, Suomenlinna is the best option.Satish wrote:Can anyone suggest a good day trip using public transport that my friends and I can do from Helsinki? Hämeenlinna is perhaps the nearest place after Porvoo, and it's OK.

There's a Castle and Sibelius' rather modest birthplace is there

Renting a car might be cheaper and/or more convenient.raamv wrote:OP said no car, and using public transport!!Can anyone suggest a good day trip using public transport that my friends and I can do from Helsinki? The architect house in Hvitrask is highly recommendable. The guy who designed the central railway station (Eliel) made his own house into a perfect example of romantic architecture. The result is best described imho as a castle straight out of the Hobbit shire. And check out the plans he had laid out for Helsinki, talk about illusional grandeur! He wanted to drain the bay of Töölö and turn it into a strict grid of beautiful housing blocks!

Why not Tampere ?
I mean, it's a pretty cool city, if a bit on the smallish side, lots of stuff to see, and close to Helsinki - one and a half hours by Pendolino...
