Special Biscuits For Babies ?

Post by sandundasa » Mon Mar 02, 2009 4:45 pm

Is there any special kind of biscuits for babies are available in Finland.

For example brand like farley's rusk, or any Finnish brand.

I searched almost all the super markets in Oulu, but couldn't find any :(

Thanks in Advance.

I think we've been using "Maria" biscuits, but I don't think they're quite farley's standard. The other thing is to give them, which keeps them occupied is "naksu" (looks like a big bag of wotsits, but contains very little of anything...)

thanks Mook,

As he is just 8 months I don't weather normal biscuits are safer to give.

I have heard that it's not good to give food that contain sugar to small babies..

Any advice is appreciated.. :lightbulb:

Carrots are also good (until they get some teeth)

My 8-months old take this in her little fists:

No salt, almost no fat. Well, almost nothing in it, it is for learning how to feed oneself with these funny things at the arms. And it is for soothing the pain in the mouth.

But nearly 400 kcal per 100g

Empty calories; begs the question: why bother :?

Much better to give fruit/veg which would give lots of vitamins and minerals for the same calorific value.

Yes, I know I read your post but honestly... the maths is easy.

A slice of apple, nice and cold from the fridge, is just as soothing on sore gums.

As for learning to feed... you are simply teaching your child that yummy food comes out of brightly coloured teddy bear plastic bags that crinkle and rustle when you open them. Your child will grow up to associate comfort (or at least pain relief) with processed gunk wrapped in plastic.

Not sure what the glycemic index is on those things but if it is anything like rice cakes (also fat- and sugar-free and highly processed) then your baby will soon be climbing the walls.

Anyway, you do what you like.

(OTOH I would be interested to know how they manage to grow maize in Finland. The only corn I have ever seen growing up here was for cattle fodder. Global warming? Maybe Finland will soon be self-sufficient in tortillas and cornflakes)

Damn, that's one of the most pedantic and self-righteous comment I have read for a while  Would you consider being the World's Secretary of Childhood and Education? The world needs you.

I have know for long the saying: "Between the husband and wife, don't even put your little finger of outsider". I think it can also be applied for the bound betwen parent and child.

I don't care what you guys think but I get REALLY UPSET when I see how gullible some people can be, especially concerning food for children.

That kind of stuff is not even food. It is total crap. Nutrition is ZERO and by feeding your kids with that kind of rubbish you are sending all the wrong messages and getting them hooked on plastic-wrapped processed food for life. I am gob-smacked that someone who comes from (what I always considered to be) a country that had the right ideas about food, even considers buying processed snacks for a baby  . The main reason my kids never got interested in gunk was because their (French) nounou never ever gave them that kind of food. In fact she is the person who taught me how to feed my kids (I grew up in the UK in the 50s/60s and was fed all kinds of gunge from boxes and cartons, didn't have a clue how to feed small children when I had mine).

Anyway, as I said before, you are free to feed your kids on what you like. But I'm pretty sure I am not the only one around here who thinks that Finnish-grown sugar and fat-free maize pop snacks are not the best solution to teething problems.

@Paul_D
Sorry, but I really, honestly do not understand what was "pedantic and self-righteous" in my previous post.

But if it makes you guys happy, I'll shut up  .

No, you are not the only one. But it seems like eeeeeverybody here (in Finland) is feeding that to their babies and raving about how a great snack it is. And not only to babies, but to toddlers and even older kids too. I see it as processed... um... non-food ("crap" is actually what I think about it), and in addition I really don't think it is a good idea to teach children to constantly snack (and especially on pure carbohydrates).

To OP: We don't have any baby biscuits here, and with that I don't mean only brands, but the whole concept of special biscuits for babies is foreign. But you could always make them yourself, I have seen online recipes. (Some Googling later...) For instance here are several: http://wholesomebabyfood.com/teethingbiscuits.htm

I'm not a baby, but would gladdly snaffle down a pack of Farley's rusks.

I think they are specifically good for babies in that they have enough roughness to scratch the itch ... (rusks are surely there for children to cut their teeth on? as opposed to soothing things like a bit of cold apple or Bongella) yet they tend not to clump or form a big wad of chewed biscuit on which the child is likely to choke ... so they can eat them without you having to worry if you turn your back on them for 5 seconds.

Personally I'd steer clear of the crappy maize snacks ... and give the kid some nice thick Cheese & Onion crisps or a lovely McVites chocolate digestive ... lights touch paper and stands back ... <-- not being entirely serious here.

Seriously, who gives one? I hated vegetables when I was a kid and now I'm a vegetarian. Go figure.
