Suggestions for one-day trips from Helsinki?

Post by elipsoid » Mon Mar 09, 2009 2:31 pm

I am currently staying in Helsinki, but I haven't seen much of southern Finland. Could anybody suggest one-day trips to surrounding cities/parks that can be done either by public transport or a car? Thanks!

You could go to Porvoo, the old part of town is rather nice. It is 50km from Helsinki and the bus costs e20 return.

If you have a car you could drive up to Lake Tuusula and visit the studio homes of Pekka Halonen, Sibelius etc and the Marthas museum and have a walk along the lake (but it is nicer in summer, not sure what is open now)

You can get to Turku by train and visit many museums and galleries, shops etc or just wander around town. OK to do all year round.

Fiskars village is about 90 mins drive from Helsinki on Route 51, then route 111. You can visit Raseborg Castle, Fagervik and Billnäs on the way. http://www.fiskarsvillage.fi Not all the artists studios are open every day in the winter but there is an exhibition on currently, coffee shop and a restaurant and a few boutiques.

You can get a bus from Kamppi to Tapiola in Espoo and visit EMMA http://www.emma.museum/ which is housed in the WeeGee exhibition centre http://www.weegee.fi/etusivu.asp?path=91526

I think you can get to Nuuksio national park in Espoo by public transport (and it is certainly easily accessible by car). You need decent boots and outdoor gear if you want to hike in the snow.

On a sunny day Ekenäs / Tammisaari on the south coast is quite nice, there is a market place, some old Jugend style villas in the old part of the town, a beach and walks along the coastline, a couple of museums and some galleries.

Hanko, further along the coast is similar (maybe bigger than Tammisaari and the beach is better).

North of Helsinki you have Riihimäki where you can visit the famous glass museum, the Finnish hunting museum is on the same site. The train museum (or is it the transport museum?) is also in Riihimäki. Slightly further north? is Iittala where you can visit the glass factories and watch the glass-blowing and shop.

In Kirkkonummi there is Hvittrask, studio home of Gesellius, Saarinen and Lindgren (?) the architects. Well worth the trip (30 mins from the city centre) and open all year round I believe. You can drop in on Lumene factory shop (or OTOH not) in Kauklahti on the way back and/or buy bread from Halme, one of the oldest bakeries in southern Finland.

If you plug any of these places into the search engine or into google you will find more info and maps etc.
