Unemployment benefit
Hi all
Sadly I will probably be one of those who will be unemployed in few months.
Holding a permanent residence permit and being a paid member to UIL for 4 years...what could I expect?
One rumor said that if Työvoimatoimisto send me to the Finnish language course, then I will not get a cent from my unemployement insurance...is that true?
Thanks all kinds of input!

If you have a permanent permit your situation ought not to be worse than Finnish citizens citizens. If you have paid your dues to a unemployment fund (directly or via an union) this calculator should tell you how much you can get for the first 500 working days. http://www.tyj.fi/default.asp?id=111
I really don't think so.One rumor said that if Työvoimatoimisto send me to the Finnish language course, then I will not get a cent from my unemployement insurance...is that true?
If they want to send to you to any course, you can't refuse (or risk losing your benefits), but as long as you do what you are told you should be safe.

Hi Rip,
Thanks for your quick reply!
Do you mean that I still can get my unemployement benefit even I am in that Finnish course program (I understood that people in that course gets pretty little money)?
Thanks!

Re: Unemployment benefit
That I think you mean is for people who come into the country with their bare ass and are put on the integration allowance, as in KELA base. You're a real have-worked-payed-dues unemployed, so you get the union payment on top.

Well, I have not the personal experience, but first of all I don't see anywhere in the relevant legislation paragraphs that would put you in worse situation as Finnish citizens. Secondly, it is at least my understanding that if unemployment authorities put you in a a some course, it will not diminish your benefits (in some cases it may increase them). What you should check in advance is if you on your own initiative want to improve your education. Part time studies or programs approved by the employment authorities can be OK, otherwise if you get classified as a full time student the student benefit levels are usually much less than what typical earnings related unemployment benefit is.unknown_world wrote:Hi Rip,

Re: Unemployment benefit
You get extra KELA money on a Finnish language course for food and travel costs. If you live in Helsinki there is a long waiting list for courses.

Re: Unemployment benefit
Since you're an UIL member, you're entitled to income-related unemployment benefit (ansiosidonnainen päiväraha) for 500 days. If you're put to a course (language course or otherwise) by työvoimatoimisto, you'll get worse benefit, i.e. basic päiväraha from KELA plus 8e "maintenance money" tax free during the course, but you'll not used up that 500 days allowence. So after the course if you can't find a job right away you still have 500 days "bigger money" to take.
At least that's what I understood
