How quick can you get a personal ID number?

Post by KahvinYstävä » Wed Mar 25, 2009 9:40 pm

Bf moving to Finland, has a 6 month contract and is a EU-citizen.

The million dollar question is how long will it take for him to get a personal ID number?

Depending if he has the right papers and goes to the right office and says the right things usually 5 minutes. Wrong papers etc. could take the 6 months...

The law as such should be clear. He should go to the police, register his residence (based on the work as a EU-citizen) in Finland and the to magistrate office to register the municipality of residence.

It should be straightforward and quick, but I have some personal experience on these matters....

Going to the magistrate and getting a number is easier than convincing the police, they want to know that you actually are working instead of promises promises... the magistrate gives you a number and tix the temporary box on the fly as long as you flutter the work contract...

Had to do a spell check on this one.. it's spelled bureaucracy.
One good reason to learn finnish; words are always spelled the way they are pronounced..

There was link supplied with that post to regarding that personal experience. Anyway, I hope you get the registration in the magistrate office done without problems, I don't know if you get the ID in that case immediately or perhaps next day, as we weren't as lucky.

If there are no problems, you should get a paper in the post one or two days later confirming that you have registered, etc. It should contain your number also.

For that you need to ask a shortly and simply answerable question

My process was quite simple. The Mrs came over first about 2 months before me and got the kids signed up at schools. I came for a visit, filled out the forms, went back to the old country to tie up some loose ends and 2 weeks later my residence card was ready to be picked up over here. Kela gave me my ID number before I even applied for the Finnish national ID card at the Police. I also got the ID card 2 weeks after applying for it.

What may have smoothed things for me is that I've been married to my wife for 10 years and she's registered our marriage in Finland almost immediately. We also own property here.
