You might have a better luck and chance if you combine java with latest techniques on Flash etc but then the difficulty is not being in the country!!

In Finland IT business is oriented on export of services and software. Very few development focused on local customers.
Therefore there is no big need to speak Finnish language, normally, IT companies use English as official language and employ many foreigns.

On another hang, Java is far from serious language, all freshgrads do code Java (at least they think so). To be demanded, you should be expert in C++, asm, RTOS, or other heavy stuff.

good luck.

I wouldn't agree with that. There is a lot of serious server software coded in java in Finland doing critical stuff.

Stupid advice...
Who the heck do you think that gives the advice on coding? The architects and most of them are comfortable in giving instructions to code in Finnish than in English..( Not that they dont hate giving Instructions in English..except that it is soo easy to do it in Finnish)..
Its really naive to think that you dont need Finnish if you are going to work in Finland for the long term..
There are exceptions and those are that!!

Who the hell cares what your native is?

IT-field is mostly Finnish speaking, because it IS mainly Finnish. Finns are nice enough to speak to your arrogant persona in English because you are too unskilled to actually be able to do anything in native.

Notice, native meaning local native AKA Finnish.

Yeah I gotta agree here with the IT being mostly in Finnish. I am a foreigner working in the IT field in Finland and have worked for or with 5 different companies over the years and guess what... all had English for their official language. BUT, guess what language I speak and hear the most here? Finnish :) Not just at lunch or on a coffee break, but in our meetings, in our projects and just about everything else. Why? Because we are in Finland ;) Sure I could be a pain and demand that they speak English, but if I had done that, I would not be speaking at the level of Finnish I have today. Sure I speak up and say something if I don't understand but I am sure happy that I stuck with it instead of being lazy and requiring everyone to speak English just because of me.

Also the comment that most of the products and services go outside of Finland... That also isn't true, TONS of the stuff I have worked on has been for Finnish customers.

By the way, how long does it take to learn Finnish for acceptable level living in the country? Do you already understand constructions like that?

The problem that there are no open vacancies :( So it can be a waste of time and money.

Yes well I'm an architecht as well (at least that reads on my card) and I work in a multinational with the "office language" as English. Which means like we call our IT support someone "ai hääf roplem, skriin is pluu" to Czech "zs zz hzdzk plz zrzcrzbrz rz przblrz?". So depending on the project and the maturity theres a variety of people, in various countries working for a variety of customers so for some we service and do documents in Finnish, for some English or Swedish, and for some 50/50. But the language question in a big company isn't the case - like for us we can't put two "monkeys" in the same cage. It always needs the "missing link" between the monkey and man there with them to avert disaster. Someone who understands them both. If I let a salesman and codegeek alone to a customers buyer - thats a disaster as they don't speak the same language even they all spoke fluently together all three.
