Transferring from a U.S. College to Finnish University

Post by soturi » Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:25 pm

Greetings.

I am currently a college student in the U.S. (Wisconsin) and am trying to figure out if I can transfer to a Finnish University (interested in University of Jyvaskyla). I know that the credit system is different, but I'm wondering if there is a conversion? Or if I wanted to study in Finland, would all prior American credits not be accepted?

I know that there are University Exchange Programs from the US to Finland, but I'm interested in actually transferring.

Thank you for any information and advice :)

Hmm, yep as you said there are exchange programmes but there's no ready-made programme for that sort of degree transfer thing (the closest would be if your home institution and a Finnish university would have some sort of a double degree agreement, but if that was the case, you'd probably know about it...)

So, you just need to ask the Faculty/Department you're interested in whether it's possible... and if, what are the requirements.

They might e.g. ask you to complete your degree first (for example if you're doing a Bachelor's now - first complete that and then apply for a Master's). In other words, you may face a "computer says no" situation.

Have you been in any contact with the university? http://www.jyu.fi

If you have any mixture in your studies like I did, you'll find yourself in an impossible situation to get
credits for all of your classes. I even had my B.A. and still they can't quite figure out what to do with
it as all my minors are things like Nuclear Engineering (which was my major for 3 years before I switched
to Linguistics), so they don't quite fit in the normal scheme of things here where technical subjects are
relegated to korkeakoulu and everything else to yliopisto.

Hope you have better luck than I did :D

Pursuivant u are the best, I'm rocking again with laughter.... 'atomlinguist'.... that one is really off the hook!

I must say it sure is a surprising change, however I've become accustomed to hearing about similar changes, as they're quite common now-a-days. But still, what really makes someone change from a study of Atomic Engineering to Linguistics? Gives me a real shock!!!

And just who did you think was discovering the names of all the bosuns and leptons and baryons and mesons, and all their various attributes as well?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
