21 Yr Old British Girl looking for Summer job in Helsinki

Post by YellowBrit » Tue Apr 07, 2009 10:42 pm

Hi there,

Thanks for reading the post- I appreciate that this is a long shot, but I might as well put my details up like many others before me.

My name is Diana, I'm 21 and am currently in my penultimate year at http://www.ucl.ac.uk (in London) studying Economics and Statistics. I'm Chinese (and can speak Cantonese), but English is my native language, and I was born in England so I have a British passport. I am looking to find a job this Summer (anytime between June to September) in Helsinki, as my Finnish boyfriend is moving over the holidays to work in the family business. Unfortunately, I am unable to speak Finnish, although I am beginning to learn some basics, and will learn properlly once I'm there.

I can be a proofreader/babysitter/work in hostel/bar/restaurant, or anything else that may be available- I'm open minded :)

My particular strengths are probably:
- Teaching mathematics
- Running around energetically with the kids (I play football and train at a wing chun studio (Chinese Martial Arts)
- Looking after children
- Proofreading (I spent a year before university working in a mortgage intermediary company, and this was my main duty)
- Updating websites (although only basic ones, with html).
- Customer facing roles (I worked as front of house/answering phone enquiries every Friday/Saturday for 2 years when I was 16)

Thanks a lot for your time- any help would be appreciated.

Ps- I have also posted on aupair sites :)
PPS- Does anyone know of a Finnish/Helsinki version of gumtree?

try (www.mol.fi.) its a website for jobs. the web is in Finnish so you can ask your bf to help out. in Finland they insist of language abilities but you might get other jobs like being a nanny or cleaning jobs that the employee doesn't require Finnish language
If you wish to convince people of something, it is more useful to be entertaining than to be right

You could certainly try this one. You can get to this job on a local bus. :)

Thanks a lot for that info :) I just found out the importance of speaking Finnish this morning (I received a heap of rejections, all stating their reason for not employing me being that I can't speak Finnish). At least the Finnish companies send replies though, English ones would either ignore the e-mail or wait a week before replying :)

As before, any additional help would be extremely appreciated. In particular if anyone knows of any families looking for nannies/au pairs. I don't need to pay rent or for food, so I can literally work for minimum wage or for "pocket money"- I just want to occupy myself whilst my boyfriend is working, and would be ideal if I can spend time with the kids :)
