Since your anti virus is not working as expected , you could try system restore ( I assume Ur computer is XP :) )

If some of your recent software installation screwed up your computer , you can always restore to a previous working state using system restore and is very simple to do . ( by default system restore is enabled in XP computers , and it creates restore points , whenever new application is installed)

To open the System Restore, go to your System Tools group under Accessories in your Programs menu. Then click on the System Restore action. A screen similar to one below will appear.

Image .

At this point you should select a restore point that you would like to restore. If a particular day has any restore points created on it the date will be in bold.
Once u done , computer shutdown and reboot .

If system restore utility didn't work for you in Normal mode , you need to do the same in Safe mode .When you log in in safe mode , it always ask about system restore.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I'd recommend to take backups of photos etc. in case you must reset to factory settings (as in format and reinstall windows).

Resetting to factory settings is really not needed in this case. I think you just need to update your anti virus software and do a full scan.
Normally resetting to factory settings only needed , when your problems can't be solved with system restore or you can't access system restore

Even if you reset to factory settings , i think you wont loss any data you already have , it is like you install windows on top of current installation.
Like Upphew mentioned , you better take backup , if you really going to do a a reset , it is windows and you never know .

Looks like a conficker infect....or an accessories Driver failure..
so a system restore will help!!

At least with Acer, first part of restoring to factory defaults is format...

Yes . I think my assumption is wrong in some cases.

Factory Image Restore = reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition
Some vendors provide the option to skip 'reformat hard drive' step.
