Is what they are called?
I need a new computer. I don't know if I should get a desktop or a laptop. My soon to be ex is willing to buy me a mini laptop, but I don't know anything about computers.
Wouldn't it be better to have a 'real' computer if you have a child using it? My child uses our computer all the time. Laptops I heard are expensive to fix if you bugger them up. And what's a mini laptop anyway?
I don't know.
Mini Laptops
Re: Mini Laptops
There is a range of new smaller laptops with 8.9" screens, they are fairly cheap to buy and are what people call mini-laptops, in the middle there are models with 10.1" screens which are better on the eyes.
A "normal" laptop has a 15.4" screen, if you look around you can find laptops this size at quite low prices. This is what I would recommend you buy.
Laptops are handy to take with you if you go anywhere, and you can always connect a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse to them at home for your child ..

Re: Mini Laptops
the mini-laptops are great if you have it with you every day or for travels. not so great for many hours of writing texts as the keyboards are often a little bit smaller than normal laptops. also, looking at the small screen can get tiring.
I have one (acer aspire), I love it! BUT: I have two other computers at home for more serious work, I keep the mini one for travelling or giving presentations at work.
the best thing about it is that it is very cheap, so if something happens to it I just buy another one. so in that aspect it might be a great choice if you have a kid playing with the computer.
the cost of the mini-laptops will be ca 250 to 500 euros.

Re: Mini Laptops
Ok thanks everyone.
I don't have the world's best eyesight, so having a bigger monitor will be better. I think we might just buy a normal desktop. I don't think I need a laptop. I use a computer for work, but I don't do any work outside of work, so I don't need a laptop for that. But then I'll be going from a 3 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom flat, so maybe a laptop will be better - takes up less room. And I can just buy a keyboard so my child has less chance of damaging the laptop.
Decisions decisions decisions..... LOL.

Re: Mini Laptops
Well , I have had a Mini laptop ,desktop and laptop. None of them satisfied my needs . Now I just have ordered a ultra portable from NetAnttila( http://www.netanttila.com/webapp/wcs/st ... uctDisplay ) . If I would be you I would get a HP Pavilion DV2 or DV3 .
I think this all depends of you needs.
In there here is the link:

Re: Mini Laptops
I don't have any special needs. I only use the computer for the net, putting my photos on it, occasionally using Microsoft word, listening to music and my cross stitch program. I don't play games or anything special. My son only plays games on YLE Lasten and this British BBC site. So we'd only need a pretty basic computer, nothing fancy or high graphics or anything.
I'll take a look at that link you provided. Thanks
