Broadband Service Providers

Post by jwesthues » Tue May 06, 2003 9:16 am

I just moved to Finland and am looking for a broadband connection. I know that HTV, Sonera, Elisa & Saunalahti all provide service. Are there others that I am missing before I go ahead and make a decision?

Thanks

Hello and welcome!

Not that I can think of. We've had these dicussions many times and what it boils down to is this:

If you want high but variable bandwidth (bw), go for welho (HTV), but if you want your own guaranteed bw, then go for ADSL. By variable bandwidth I mean that if there are other people in your block using Welho, then you'll be on a shared link, so that amount of bw available to you depends on how much the other people utilise their connection.

Hope this helps...

Neil.

Welho

Actually, Welho offers two services. Welho Pro has the variable bandwidth as Neil described. Welho 525 offers guaranteed 525 kbps. They now also have a 1 Mbps version of this offering.

Really? How much does that cost? With Welho Pro I commonly receive a meg (down) but it depends where I am leeching from. ftp.funet.fi is a favourite of mine to download Linux ISO's from at warp 9!

From http://www.htv.fi/welho/default.asp?f=9 :
- welho mega (=1Mbps) 79 €/month
- welho 525 49 €/month

You'll need a cable modem, which you can get from HTV:
- purchase: 125 €
- rent: 6 €/month

Welho Pro costs 46,25 €/month

The speed of Welho Pro depends very much on your neighborhood and building. A friend of mine in Eastern Helsinki had download speeds varying from 2kbps to 1Mbps, sometime stalling altogether. That's why I went for Welho 525.

And, what the privileged people who get HTV always forget to tell:

You need to be
a) living in a house/flat that gets cable (not all do)
b) in an area that is covered by Welho (pretty well these days)

bonus question
c) guess if I get cable? or even a tv signal from the antennae...
Cheers, Hank W.

welho and ADSL

Post by vicious1 » Fri May 09, 2003 11:32 am

Well from my point of view, Jippi's ADSL (Saunalahti) has the best offer so far and they are covered almost all around the greater helsinki area. (i live in vantaa and still have it). Their Service so far has been exceptional. I have had no downtime since i got it (last year). I pay 70 euros for 1mbit down and 384 kbit up, and no matter from where i pull stuff (ever tried a remote server like japan from welho??) i always get a 102KB/s thruput. From my previous experience with Welho, the PRo service is excelent but the upload speed is pretty crappy. I had Elisa for a while as well and they had MAJor problems all the time, DNS outtages and things like that.
Anyway, cable is nice when all you want is surf, but knowing some of Welho's "engineers", I wouldnt bet my life on them to deliver stable uplink bandwidth, especially if you plan on doing video conferencing etc.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I need to get a new connection, I live in hki in an 'elisa' house so Sonera won't offer me their current Hullut Päivät deal (€19.99 a month, 2years, 24MB) so i just wanted to check i'm comparing all the available service providers. Welho(DNA), Sonera, Elisa(Saunalahti) is there anyone else? Also, is there an equivalent to PriceRunner that i could use? Thanks.
