buying a used car, diesel or gas?

Post by fastinjun » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:05 am

Ive been told that having a diesel car will cost me more in taxes per year but no one seems to know how much more. I need to buy a car soon and can only afford a used one.
Any ideas about the cost of a diesel as opposed to a gas?

Well do you know the weight of your new car?

Road tax is for pre 1994 94,90/a and post 1994 127,75/a

To know the diesel tax for every starting 100 kilos the tax is 6,7c/day so 24,46 x weight/100 is it now...

so for 2050kg car its 21 x 24,46 = 513,66/a extra for the diesel

After you know the tax that you would pay, you should estimate how many km you'll drive a year. You can then get an idea of how much gas or diesel you'd burn. If you drive a higher number of kms then a diesel might be the wiser choice. For me, I get by fine with gas, but my wife drives a lot more for work things and such so she has diesel, the tax sucks but its not as much as she would pay if she had a gas car.

Was it the break-even point for a family car was sometwhere around 17 000 km. But now you have those small dinky toys which don't weigh so much I don't know what their break-even is.

Hmmm, I'd the impression that it was much larger than that.

Actually, it is! (0.9c/day is for commercial vehicles, it's 6.9 c/day for normal cars)

Yeah it can even be less than 17,000.

My wife's car gets an average of 6.3L per 100km (city and highway driving combined). Her tax for her car was just over 500 so from looking at that chart lets say 538.01€. Say she drives 12,000km a year (its actually a lot more). And correct me if I am wrong (haven't been doing much math these last few years ;) ) but wouldn't that be about 756 liters for the year? Ok so say the average cost of diesel over a year's time would be 0.98€ per liter. That would mean 740.88€ a year for diesel plus 538.01€ for the tax. Total for the year 1278.89€.

Now lets say I drive my car 12,000km a year. I have a gas engine and I average about 8.5L per 100km. Lets say the average price for gas for a year is 1.25€ (I am sure it was higher at least for 2008). Anyway that would be 1020 liters of gas for the year. Total yearly gas price 1275€.

Again, correct me if I am wrong but at least that makes sense to me. Right there they break about even.

Actually, the break-even is more like 10 000 km/year.

(Sadly enough, I did a Spreadsheet to work it out)

Nice chart, I did all that work calculating it and you made it so easy for anyone to just put in the necessary data ;) For my example though it still is about the 12,000km mark between the cars I was referring too. But yeah its not so much if you think about it. Many people stay away from the diesel just because they are afraid of that tax, then drive 20,000+ km a year with a gas engine. But one thing though, I have heard that Finland's "low" diesel price is illegal in the EU and that some day its going to get more expensive, is that true? Of course when that happens who knows.

Hi

This could be true!!

Question is how much cost diesel cars there; for example VW Golf 6 with 2.0 TDi ( a new one- bruto and netto)??

Which mark of diesel cars are cheaper there?

Can anyone find some prices and post them here or send me PM or e-mail?

These are 2nd hand cars - the taxes have already been paid. Tax free cars are either new, or bought in a different country (e.g. http://automobil.de)

Saying that, there are a few cars (imports that haven't had the papers done yet) listed as tax free on netti-auto - maybe you should use the english interface...

You'll have hard time to find "netto" prices... http://www.kuluttajavirasto.fi/Page/091 ... b28eb.aspx
