Garbage

Post by umit » Sun Apr 26, 2009 8:27 pm

Today I was about to throw a couple of jars ands a few cans into the "lasi" and "metalli" containers just in front of my apartment block, someone came towards me yelling and waving. He said those containers belong to their apartment block and he is not paying for my rubbish! I tried to tell him that I was throwing only glass and metals, because in our garbage cabin we don't have these. And since those metal and glass containers are in the open area I thought they are for common use. But this guy was not interesed to listen me and insisted to take my rubbish away from "his" containers. At the moment I don't know where to throw my glass and metal stuff...

Now, I'm just curious... Is it really a big deal if I throw my recyclable material (not garbage) to someone else's container? Do you pay a specific fee to the municipality for the collection of these recycle materials? (I mean, do you pay more if you collect more recycle material?) If so, how much?

Just ignore the guy and do what you think is good.
IF he thinks he is paying..say that you are paying more........to save the planet and keep people like him from getting charged..

I'd say that it isn't big deal id you throw your thrash into other housing coop's thrash bin. But if you and your neighbour and their neighbours start to use someone else's thrash bin, then I'd suggest that you arrange your own bin.

Ofcourse you have to pay more to recycle. Although I hope that my neighbours from few years ago got some money back, when their bio waste was not collected by bio waste truck and was emptied to same truck that collected normal rubbish. :)

Most towns have public recycle centers which you can use without fee and with clear conscience. I have spam folder in my email, but it doesn't mean you can forward your spam to me, if you don't have one.

By law you can't throw but by common sense you can. But after all common sense is not so common.

There should be a glass collection thing somewhere nearby. Usually it is next to some food store. Two things, one for coloured glass, one for non-coloured.

Hmm. Can I come dump all my junk in your dumpster umit?
It is annoying when "our" containers get really full and waste management firm charges great deal EXTRA for emptying bins which for example have their lids slightly open (because of amount of trash in them).

So it would be really cool if I could just fill your bins until they burst and our housing company could save money.

Are you getting the point here umit?

While I agree that most likely glass and metal containers will not be filled to excess, it is possible.
And if you think dumping your trash to container of other people is A-OK with glass... What is there to guarantee others that you are not willing to do so for other trash as well? Leading to overflowing bins and extra expenses to inhabitants of that house...

I guess no you can't, cos our dumpster is locked in a cabin.

There is no guarantee. If you and the guy in my neighborhood want to guarantee that, you have to pay a little more and get a cabin built with a lock. And according to your calculations you would save money in the long term by doing this...

Absolutely... But it doesn't mean that I agree with it. As some people already mentioned I'm doing a favor to the planet and making contribution to Finland economy. I think the idea of the waste management is the same. Then why they charge people more for collecting more?

This post brings up mixed feelings because while the guy should care about the environment and all that jazz it still sucks that someone else is coming in and filling up your trash bins on your dime. In the end though, he was not out of line to tell you to go somewhere else with your crap since he is the one that helps pay for that bin to get emptied. We have these trash police in our building who thought it would be wise to get rid of one of our trash bins to save money. Now every long weekend and holiday they get so full we get charged extra for the over flowing ones. Does it save money in the end? I doubt it. I think we save 200€ a year having 1 less bin. But that's not 200€ a year for me. That's 200€ a year for all 17 apartments.
The same trash police also dig through the trash seeing what people are throwing out and then put things on display which they think should have been recycled or put somewhere else. Some people have way too much time on their hands!

I may be wrong, but I recall that our waste disposal company does not charge for metal or glass disposal as they can sell those on at a profit, which covers their collection charges.

Paper and bio-waste I'm not sure about, paper has far less value per tonne as a raw material than either glass or metal.

A bin of energy waste has a lower disposal cost than mixed municipal solid waste (MSW aka sekajäte), which is pretty obvious as it is more useful, has by and large been pre-sorted and has a high calorific value which can be used directly in incineration / power plants with little further treatment.

The main one that housing companies pay to dispose of is mixed waste.

When our building opened there were 3 mixed waste containers. After a couple of years, one of those was dropped for an energy waste, today there are 2 energy waste and only 1 mixed waste, which as I understand it has decreased annual disposal costs.
