Suburbs if Helsinki
Hey everyone,
So, I'm going to be living in the suburb of Pasila in Hell. Can you guys please let me know how this suburb rolls?

Well I can tell you already that this Pasila in Hell you are moving to is much worse than the Pasila that we have in Helsinki!

I haven't heard good things about it, and also, my son was beaten unconscious in Pasila at a bus stop one evening about 2 and a half years ago.
I'd look for another place if it were me.

I think it is older. It was 1970´s when I was appointed a room in Pasila HOAS. That was when I had just arrived in Helsinki, and I didn´t really know anything about the town (I had just been to the amusement park and zoo when I was a child). I took a tram to Pasila (and yes, it is not "a suburb", the tram goes there), and just stood there outside HOAS building. It was very windy and everything seemed gray. I got this horrible choking feeling in my throat and walked away. I phoned HOAS and said in no way I am able to live there. After a lecture (spoiled brat) I managed to get a room in Otaniemi HOAS. Not even Helsinki but Espoo, but it was green, there was sea, and it was possible to breathe.1980's concrete design by dildobrain architechts
Yes, I am from countryside.
Re: Suburbs if Helsinki
Well, there is East German.., sorry, Pasila and West Pasila which is like an idyllic little Hobbiton in comparison just next to the Central park, the difference is, hmm, considerable. So, it all depends on which side of tracks you'll be living.
Re: Suburbs if Helsinki
I think Pasila is phenomenal. Whenever i have friends visiting who haven't been to Helsinki, I always take them there. The whole area is just incredible. Amazing 70s design with pedestrian and car traffic seperated on different levels. And not a spot of green! Gotta love those designers. To top it all off, there's this one wooden house (Rauhaasema, a peace ngo)in between the concrete hightowers that contrasts so much with the rest of the environment, it hurts the eyes.

Yeah, actually the West Pasila is more 1980's, theres parts from the 1960's... East Pasila was mainly built 1974-78, but parts later. One other "DDR" is Merihaka. Its easily accessed from Hakaniemi via the pedestrian bridge... the parking level gives me the hives...

East Pasila looks a lot like this...

West Pasila is - slightly different, but only stone's throw (literally) from this...

Haven't lived there, though, so can't say. Depends on the address I guess, Pasila is not a huge area but it's got -erm- different zones...
...and yeah, Merihaka

The plus point in Merihaka is that it's close to the centre, offers good views over the sea -if you're lucky- and I think it's more peaceful than Pasila (?). A certain 70's concrete vibe undeniably present

We lived in West Pasila for a few months. We were in a decent spot (just at the hedge of the forrest). The buildings around us were red bricks, 4 floors high. So yeah decent. but out of our little nest of red brick buildings it was concrete jungle... My in-laws had their car windows broken while visiting us. I wasn't comfortabl going to the local Alepa by myself, always drunk or high people.
