any moms-to-be?
Hey there,
If there is a same topic as this one before my apologizes!
I was wondering if there are any moms-to-be out there?
I am 7 weeks pregnant and my first doctor appointment is nexk week, I would just like to know what they ask and do in those check -ups, would they be doing an ultrasound at 8 weeks preg?Is the fetus visible at this size and can u hear heart beat? Do doctors in Finland advise to take folic acid? how much Folic acid is needed daily whilst pregnant? what are the hospital procedures? Do they do C-section here if you ask?
Sorry for all the questions just that it is my first pregnancy and I would like to hear from all of you wonderful mommies and mommies-to-be
Hope to hear from you

Hi!
Congratulations
I'm now 12 weeks pregnant. I had my first visit at the health centre around week 7, and then my first ultrasound last week. The nurse at the health centre just asked a lot of questions, took my blood pressure & weighed me, and later I went to the lab for blood tests.
You can go to a private clinic for an earlier ultrasound. Unfortunately I'm not sure what is visible then, but I seem to remember a friend of mine telling me she saw the baby's heartbeat in her ultrasound on week 8.
As for folic acid: my mother-in-law wanted me to start taking it as soon as she heard the news. I asked my health centre nurse about it, and she said it's okay to take it, but not necessary if my diet contains enough veggies and wholemeal products. She did suggest a multivitamin pill of my choice, though, and I've been taking one which contains folic acid among other vitamins. My mother-in-law, a nurse herself, said 0,4 mg / day of folic acid is recommendable.
I've got to go now, but I'll gladly return for some more pregnancy talk... not too sure yet about hospital procedures, but I'm learning every day too. Enjoy your pregnancy, hope you're not suffering from too much morning sickness!
Congratulations

Re: any moms-to-be?
No it'll be an appointment with the nurse in neuvola. You'll have two scans: one around week 12 and another one around week 18. Obviously if there's a need you'll have more. I had an extra scan done at week 37 to know if I could deliver vaginally as I had a section for my daughters. You see the neuvola nurse regularly though, once a month then after week 30 if I remember right it goes to twice a week and after week 36 it's every week.natty wrote: would they be doing an ultrasound at 8 weeks preg?
It's an embryo, not a fetus yet. You can usually see it but it is so small. You can see the flicker from the heartbeat though. I had a scan at about that time due to heavy bleeding and we definitely saw the heartbeat as well as the bag and the embryo.natty wrote:Is the fetus visible at this size and can u hear heart beat?
In Finland they don't give it automatically as they have very little cases of spina bifida and other neural tube abnormalities. But if you're a foreigner they might advise you to do it. Ideally though you should take it before conception and for the first 12 weeks so there might not be much point anymore for you now.natty wrote:Do doctors in Finland advise to take folic acid? how much Folic acid is needed daily whilst pregnant?
I would say only if you have a valid reason for it such as prior c-sections due to maternal factors. They do tend to make you deliver vaginally as much as possible, which is a good thing I think as it is much faster to recover. I had a c-section for my twins and just had a normal birth for my son even if he was well over 4kg.natty wrote:Do they do C-section here if you ask?

Hi there!
I'm 14 weeks pregnant and due in march; have you had your appointments yet?
I had really bad morning sickness and cramping, so they've done 3 extra ultrasounds for me already at each of my doctor appointments, which was a surprise to me, as well as the normal one at 12 weeks.
Now I'm waiting for the one at 20 weeks. I was surprised to learn that the doctor probably won't tell us the sex of the baby even if they can tell. Neuvola said we need to make a private appointment for that.
Take care!

Re: any moms-to-be?
Hello
My due date is in start of december. Now im 29th week of pregnancy. I was in Katiloopisto and there they told me that baby is a boy when i was i think 21st week. I asked and they told me, but it was on on expert ultrasound, so maybe u will have to wait till then if u wanna know is ur baby boy or girl. I acctually figure out my pregnancy when i was 16th week (no symptomes at all...wierd i admit) , so i missed first expert ultrasound, but anyway for findig out gender fetus have to be atleast 15 weeks old i think. In Neuvola ull have ultrasound in about 27th week and there they will see only some basic things like position of baby and his/her weight, they also do first gynecological exam. Its bit strange coz in my home land they do it much more often. So, point is dont expect to find out gender of baby in Neuvola (i heard also that they dont wanna say it there), but try to ask when u go to hospital on expert ultrasound in 21st week , and im sure they will tell you if they can see (sometimes baby is shy
)
About folic acid nobody didnt told me anything in Neuvola. Nurce only told me to take monivitamini for example *Raskaus*, and Omega 3 - Moller. Both of those contains folic acid, but i also, because im not originally finnish, take additional folic acid , even if they didnt told me anything about that. Also somewhere in 24th week, my rauta (iron) was low (it should be between 120 to 150) and mine was 117, so i took 2 tablets of Raskaus monivitamini per day and some more additional iron tablets, so now my iron is 133 (they checked it in Neuvola yesterday)
Somewhere in 6th months of pregnancy Neuvola (atleast here in Helsinki, but im sure its same everywhere) organise educational groups for couples, and there they tell us about labor, breastfeeding etc. Its in finnish lang. so its good to have atleast some basic knowledge of finnish or even better husband or bf (if he is finnish speaker, so he can help lil in translation) . How ever its nice way to met some other couples , and most of them have acctually same due date like u, and they live in ur area, so its kinda neighbours. Dont miss it, it can be usefull, especially because they make tour in hospital and everything can be well explained. Also Katoloopisto in Helsinki provide tours on english language.
And yes , few days ago i got package from Kela, tbh i was very supriced coz i expected much less, but those things ive got there plus all i already bought for my baby are more than enough. I wont have time to wear all that clothes to him even
Procedure for that is simple, In Neuvola they will give u some paper where is written that ure pregnant etc, and with that paper u go to nearest Kela and apply for that package or some small amount of money (in case that u dont want package). That application is also for some aitiysraha (moms support money) and some baby lisa (my finnish writting sucks still - but its written like that). How ever its all written in some small Kela book, about those amounts etc. Mom will ofc get more money if she is employed in here, if not she will get miniumum which is i think 15-16 euros per day (about 300 e per month - enough for diepers atleast). That money u should get i think month before labor or something, im not so sure about it. But Kela package arrive 2.5-3 months before due date. There is link where u can see what u will get in that package if u maybe dont know : http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/suomi.ns ... 02155308EH
About induced labor, its true that they will wait even 16 days after due date. But i think its same everywhere in Scandinavia. How ever i hope none of us wont have that lazy baby
It is different coz in my homeland doctors usually dont wait longer than 7 days after due date, because of risk that ambiotic fluid can be green and baby will suffer etc.
I didnt talk with anybody about C- section, but i kow thats possible to ask for it. How ever only case i know for C-section is my sister in law but to her that was done coz babys heart start to beat very slow and they couldnt continue normal labor. My opinion is why to have a scar if i dont have to. Im not sure i would choose that option, but thats free choice in the end
So my pregnancy is more or less normal. Maybe not so normal coz i dont really have any symptoms, except hugeee belly. Now i have problem with sleping coz its hare for me to find good position, so only way to me is to sleep on right side and to put some pillow between legs.
I hope i didnt get bore u with my long post but all those things i didnt know when i found out that im pregnant.
and sry for my english is not my native so i probabbly have a lots of grammar mistakes ,but i hope u can understand me .
Hugs for all mums-to-be

Greetings to all the mom-to -be!!
It was lovely to read all your post and I was surely not bored except really interested and always have more questions! This is my first baby and kinda nervous.
Has any one choosen Naistenklinikka? Ive managed to ask one or two people about Naisten klinik and Katioopisto (sorry for the spelling mistake) and one said Nasitenklinik is specialised in gyneocological problems like birth only whilst, Katioopisto is not specialised but has all kinds of other patients with all kinds of illnesses. And whilst another person told me it is Katioopisto which is specialised in mother-baby. So I just wanted to clarify and see if anyone know anythign about them?
This week, one mother told me that in Katioopisto, one friend had a c-section there and they used construction nails to close her up after. That was kind of weird and I told her it was hard to believe.
Well ladies, hope to hear from you all sometimes.

Uh to be honest it s hard for me to belive that they used construction nails to close that woman after c-section.
Ill try to find out more about that.

Re: any moms-to-be?
Both Naistenklinikka and Kätilöopisto are specialized in deliveries. But Naistenklinikka (= women´s clinic) is also specialized in everything gynecological. Of course the maternity ward is separate, you don´t see uterus or breast cancer patients next to mothers and babies.Nasitenklinik is specialised in gyneocological problems like birth only whilst, Katioopisto is not specialised but has all kinds of other patients with all kinds of illnesses. And whilst another person told me it is Katioopisto which is specialised in mother-baby.
The person who spoke about construction nails either speaks very bad English and doesn´t know the right word or she is just trying to scare you. Even the thought is ridiculous.
Re: any moms-to-be?
Just to clarify, a few things about the ultrasounds... The official recommendation is that at least two ultrasounds are performed on everyone during their pregnancy; one at around 12 weeks which is an NT (Nuchal translucency) ultrasound where they can find out whether your baby is likely to have Down Syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalities, and another at around 18-20 weeks where they check the development of internal organs and take measurements to check the baby's developing properly (the timing is linked the 24 week limit on abortions in Finland). However, I think the law currently says that at least one ultrasound must be provided free of charge, despite the recommendation being two. This is why the number of scans varies depending on where in Finland you live - e.g. in Helsinki we do get two ultrasounds. If I remember correctly soon (next year?) the law will change to ensure everyone will get at least two scans. These scans take place in the hospital where you've decided to give birth, by the way.
On top of this, in Helsinki, you will visit the doctor at neuvola twice or three times during your pregnancy, and the depending on the neuvola and the doctor, they might do a scan there too. I had two scans done by the neuvola doctor, one because she had an intern there and wanted to demonstrate the ultrasound, and the other because the doctor wanted to check the positioning of the baby. But a close friend of mine only had the two ultrasounds during her entire pregnancy, so there's no guarantees the neuvola doctor will do a scan - depending on the neuvola, they might not even have the equipment!

Re: any moms-to-be?
Hello!
I am also one of those pregnant moms-to-be. My due date is also in the beginning of December.
About those ultrasounds. I have to really stress that it depends from where you live. I have got already many ultrasounds for several reasons.
- There are 3 standards ones here in this region: 12w - 18-20w and 37w
- Because I have had 2 miscarriages I have had 2 extra ultrasounds before week 12. My terveyskeskus doctor thought it would be best to do so, so I had one in terveyskeskus and one in the hospital.
- Last week (I was 27w+4) I had again a doctor's visit in terveyskeskus and she did again an ultrasound.
- And last but not least I have a very nice äitiysneuvola-nurse. Every time the ultrasound machine has been in her office, I have had a fun ultrasound (so no medical at all). And this has happened twice.
So I am now 29 weeks pregnant and I have had already 7 ultrasounds! Quite much and I suppose rather exceptional in Finland. But it is really because of our äitiysneuvola-nurse. She is fantastic. I have to say that this time I have had a normal pregnancy, although I can't really enjoy it. My sugar is fine, my bloodpressure is great, the baby likes to move, especially at night. The only thing is that my belly is really big, which makes things a bit uncomfortable. But I can't wait until December when I finally can hold this little one in my arms!
Greetings and good luck to all of you!
Gigi
